A Promise Kept

It certainly pays to have friends who become millionaires. At least so William B. Sleigh Jr. '25 and Norman W.Martin '25 recently found out. Fresh out of Dartmouth back in 1927, Sleigh, Martin and an unidentified third, who plays a central part in the story, made a pact that the first of the trio to make a million dollars would treat the other two to a free trip to Europe.

± 1 The years passed and the pact, made almost in jest, was forgotten. Sleigh became a successful Marblehead, Mass., lawyer and Martin a New York broker. The mysterious third moved to the Midwest and became a salesman — he is the one who made the million. Last winter both Sleigh and Martin received telephone calls from him reminding them of the wager and, true to his word of many years ago, renewing the offer. It was just that simple.

Sleigh and his family left for Europe in mid-August. Martin, who already had prior plans for the summer, is planning to take his trip next year.
