The 1959-60 academic year is already well under way at Thayer School with the Summer Session in full swing. This session has been completely recast and consists of a common course for all postgraduates and is entitled "Analog and Numerical Methods of Engineering Analysis." Thayer School staff members participating in the instruction of this course are Profs. Carl Long and Albert Heckbert.

All of the alumni will rejoice to learn that Dean Bill Kimball '29 has completely recovered from an illness which kept him confined for most of the summer. After an August trip to Bermuda, Bill appears and feels fine as ever.

Prof. Russ Stearns '38 and family have been spending the summer months in Evanston, Ill., where Russ has been serving as a consultant to SIPRE.

The 1959 Thayer School Graduation Exercises were held on June 7 in the Bema, where degrees were conferred on 25 graduates. At the exercises, Fritz Geller TT'48 inducted the graduating class into the Dartmouth Society of Engineers and awarded the DSE Prize to Leslie Tenn-Lyn CE'59 for his paper, "A Proposed Suspension Stadium Design." Dr. Charles Goodrich '06 awarded the Charles F. and Ruth D. Goodrich Prize to Coleman Colla EE'59.

Bill Macurdy EE'57 informs us that he has been devoting his time in the Bell Labs to Systems Engineering and has found the problems both challenging and interesting. We have learned that Bill has been selected as a candidate for a CDT Fellowship, the award of which would mean three years at MIT in pursuit of a Doctorate. Little Anne arrived at the Macurdy household last September and is reported to be now in complete charge.

Larry Scammon ME'57, who was at Bell Labs with Bill, has recently returned to the Hanover area to accept a position with the Thermal Dynamics Corporation in West Lebanon. In case anyone has forgotten, this is the corporation founded by Jim Browning D' 44 and managed by Merle Thorpe ME'53 and currently producing fantastic devices known as "plasma jets."

Bob Lee TT'58 has recently joined the Northwest Bancorporation of Minneapolis as a management trainee and has been assigned to the Great Falls National Bank. Bob is applying for a Professional Engineers license in Montana.

A clipping from the Eastern Ski Bulletin includes a picture of Roger Simpter '43 and children Karen and Barry. The caption notes that Karen and Barry were crowned Edelweiss S.C. Champions at Greenfield, Mass., during the annual club races.

It has been announced that SKF Industries have acquired control of the Reed Instrument Company of Los Angeles and that EdBergethon ME'48 will be general manager of the new division.

Harry Russell CE'58 reports that he is presently situated in Groton, Conn., supervising the construction of sewers there for Metcalf and Eddy. To supplement this interesting work, Harry is pursuing an evening course in architecture, an old hobby of his.

The February issue of the ASCE Journal of The Construction Division contains an ardele,"What the Industry Should Have fromthe Colleges." Co-author is John FondahlCE'48.

In the October 1958 issue of Transactions, Engineering Institute of Canada, is a discussion of the bearing strength of ice by Russ Stearns '38.

On May 23 Prof. George Taylor held his annual Moot Court. As one of the presiding magistrates this year, we welcomed back "Judge" Chuck Queenan TT'53. The arguments before the court this year were concerned with the question of damage liability for losses due to foundation failure near a construction job.

Announcement has been made of the engagement of Miss Marilyn Allred of Jacksonville, Fla., to John Musa EE'55. The prospective bride is a school teacher in Morristown, N. Y., and John is a missiles systems development engineer at the Bell Labs, Whippany, N. J.
