THE bright September days are gone, replaced by the somber, often cold October days, and in a similar manner the bright optimism of last month's pre-season column has been replaced by the harsh reality of results and statistics.
Dartmouth's Ivy League championship football team, favored by many to repeat this fall, has yet to win a ball game, and is currently in the cellar of the league. The Big Green was badly trounced by both Holy Cross and Boston College, and in league play had to settle for a scoreless tie against a reputedly weak Brown team after losing to resurgent Pennsylvania.
Nor have the other varsity teams fared well. The soccer team has a record of two wins and three losses to date, with a 0-3 record in league play. Dartmouth's sophomore-studded cross-country squad has dropped two dual meets and finished second in a triangular clash.
The freshman teams are not performing in exactly spectacular fashion either. The '63 football team has one win and one loss, the soccer squad has won two games and lost one, and the cross-country runners have lost a dual meet and placed second in triangular competition.
Dartmouth's Rugby Club team is the only undefeated squad at present with one victory and a tie in Eastern play, but unfortunately this is not a DCAC-sponsored sport, so the results do not show on the official record books.
The fall season is not yet half completed, however, and there have been indications that conditions should improve. For one thing, the football team now has only Ivy opponents remaining and should do better. Both the soccer and cross-country teams have been developing and also should finish in stronger fashion.
