WITH THE BIG GREEN TEAMS
December 1959

THE major story on the athletic front this past month is the amazing resurgence of Dartmouth's football squad. After going winless in four games, the Big Green roared back to defeat Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Cornell on four consecutive Saturdays, all of the games played in the rain or mud. With Princeton still to be met in the season's finale, the Indians have a 4-1-1 record in Ivy League play and are currently in second place with only an outside chance of retaining their championship.

Dartmouth's other varsity teams have not been having the inspired success of the football team. The soccer team has lost four games, including three to Ivy opponents, which gives it a season record of four wins and six defeats, and a 1-5 league record. The cross-country team added two dual meet victories and placed sixth in the Heptagonals, for an overall 2-2 mark. Varsity totals show ten wins against eleven defeats and one tie.

Freshman records have been mediocre. The '62 football team ended up with two wins against three losses, the soccer team had a 4-3 record, and the cross-country team won two dual meets, lost two, and placed second in a triangular meet. Freshman totals are eight victories and eight defeats.

Meanwhile, Dartmouth's winter teams are beginning to mobilize for action. The varsity basketball, hockey, swimming and squash teams are holding daily practice sessions, the skiers are doing conditioning leg work, and the indoor track team will pick up as soon as cross country is over. We will report briefly on these sports later in the column. Let's turn our attention first to recent action in fall sports.
