PRESIDENT DICKEY, who underwent leg surgery for a phlebitis condition in December, had to return to the hospital early last month for another operation, to remove some cartilage in one knee. His doctors report that he is recovering satisfactorily, and it is expected that he will be able to keep several out-of-town engagements in March.
A gift of $50,000 from Richard M. Haskell of Colebrook, Conn., has been made to the College for the establishment of a scholarship in memory of the Civil War hero, Col. Frank A. Haskell of the Class of 1854. Mr. Haskell made the gift from the estate of his father, Frank Haskell, a nephew of the Union Army officer who played a conspicuous part in the repulse of Pickett's charge at Gettysburg and later was killed at Cold Harbor in the last engagement of the Wilderness Campaign. Colonel Haskell wrote TheBattle of Gettysburg, a classic account of the battle and one of the great first-hand stories to come out of the Civil War. Several items of memorabilia once owned by Colonel Haskell were also given to Dartmouth by his grand-nephew.
The Dartmouth Trustees have authorized preparation of plans for the complete remodeling of North Fayerweather and Middle Massachusetts Halls. In both dormitories the present woodframe construction will be replaced. Work on both halls is expected to be completed by the fall of 1960.
