Oregon undergraduates who were home for the Christmas holidays were entertained by the Portland alumni at a luncheon on December 29. Those present were F. E. Lockyear '59, Christie McLellan '60, Bill Burton '61, Bill Farrens '61, Jan Wyers '61, Bill Babcock '62, Allen Priaulx '62, and Kermit Thompson '62. Also invited were all the boys in the Portland area who have made application for admission to the college for next fall. A stimulating question and answer period followed the luncheon.
The high school boys asked pertinent, intelligent questions and the answers from the undergraduates gave us all an insight into the college as it is today. We will certainly plan to do the same thing next year—the best salesmen for the college are the undergraduates, not the alumni.
The number of Oregon students at Dartmouth has grown steadily since World War II. In 1946, there were only five; today there are fourteen.
The past two or three years have shown an increasing interest in Dartmouth from communities outside Portland, and the Oregon contingent now includes boys from The Dalles, Hood River, Grants Pass, Coos Bay, and McMinnville.
Much of the credit for Oregon-at-Dartmouth can be attributed to Sain Martin '27. When President Dickey was here last year, John Storrs '42 introduced Sam as "Mr. Dartmouth," a well-deserved accolade. Without his consistent interest and untiring work, it is doubtful that we would have more than an occasional applicant.
