Dartmouth strength in the field events and the fine record-setting pace of freshman distance runner Tom Laris have been the only highlights of a rather poor track season to date. In a January triangular meet with Cornell and Colgate the Indians finished second, with Cornell gaining 76½ points, Dartmouth 53½ and Colgate seven. Rod Isaacson's win in the shotput, Wes Mattson's victory in the 35-pound weight toss, Dick Husband's broad jump victory, and second-place finishes by Jerry Boyle in the 600-yard race and John Ebers in the high hurdles accounted for most of Dartmouth's scoring in this meet.

Mattson in the weight toss and Husband in the broad jump were the Big Green's first-place winners as the Indians bowed to Harvard, 74-35. Mike Kistler took second in the mile, while Dartmouth's two relay teams - Alex Burgin, Taylor Tyler, John Nunn and Jim Mueller in the mile, and Bob Collyer, Ellie Weiss, Tim Lennox, and Mike Kistler in the two mile - won their events.

Dartmouth's freshman track team is undefeated in three meets to date, with Tom Laris outstanding. He turned in a twomile clocking of 9:08.7 to place third at the Knights of Columbus Invitational Meet in the Boston Garden, and then ran a 4:22.4 record mile against the Harvard freshmen in Hanover. Laris is without doubt one of the most promising distance runners to come to Dartmouth and his career should be interesting to watch.
