Under the sponsorship of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation, a two-day colloquium, February 27-28, brought two noted persons to Hanover to discuss the topic of "Individuality and Conformity." Students and faculty participated in the program whose principal issue concerned the individual's problem of maintaining integrity under pressures of the organizational growth demanded by modern society.
The featured speakers were Margaret Mead, famous anthropologist, and J. Irwin Miller, a businessman and former Rhodes scholar who has earned a wide reputation for his lucid exposition of management's point of view. One of the highpoints of the colloquium was a panel Friday evening discussing the question of individuality and campus pressures. Moderated by Kurt Wehbring '59, president of the Undergraduate Council, the panel included Dr. Mead, Mr. Miller and Robert Kahn '60, student winner of an essay contest on "Individuality and the College Community."
The colloquium was part of the Tucker Foundation's program of bringing stimulating personalities to Hanover and encouraging students to participate with them in formulating views on the basic questions facing our society today. Another such program is scheduled for spring.
