APRIL 1959 CHRISTIAN E. BORN, JOHN w. MOXON

This month it is a pleasure to report that John Dickey has recovered nicely not only from his phlebitis operation but also from a knee cartilage operation performed on him February 5. Some of you may have seen John, at the time of reading this, as the good reports indicate that he may again be able to meet engagements outside of Hanover sometime in March.

Our thanks to Dick Robin for the clipping which announced that Ed Coddington, head of the history department at Lafayette College, has been named national president of Phi Alpha Theta, honorary history society. Ed will hold this office until late 1960. He has served as national vice president for the last two years, and was a member of the society's national council from 1954 to 1956. Phi Alpha Theta was founded in 1921 at the University of Arkansas and there are now 171 chapters in this country and abroad. Ed founded Lafayette's Chapter in 1948 and has been its adviser since that time. The national secretary-treasurer of the society is quoted, in the article, as saying that election to the position of national president "indicates a reputation of national renown and leadership in the historical fields." It will be interesting to many to know that the society publishes a quarterly journal and annually awards three history scholarships and three prizes for historical research by students.

Karl Michael's swimming team didn't do so badly after all and we were interested to see a photo, recently, in the Valley News in which he is shown presenting a painting of the late John Glover '55 to John Dickey and Red Rolfe '31. Glover, many of you will remember, was one of the most outstanding swimmers on Karl's many teams and died suddenly in 1956 in the Yale pool while preparing for the 1956 Olympics.

Bedeke Bellerose has been reported as running for a second term on the school board in Rutland, Vt., with the election on March 3. We have not heard how he made out. Ned Richardson, Division Traffic Superintendent in the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. in Boston, was news-itemed recently in connection with showing slides of a trip to the Virgin Islands. We have only recently heard that Bud Foulks was a member of the New York Dartmouth Club's Bridge Team which battered the Princeton Club team by 2,790 points. Another item from the New York Club advises that Louis F. Bachrach, illustrious photographer of men, has presented the Club with a color portrait of John Dickey and that it is a really handsome picture. When framed, this portrait will be hung in the entrance foyer as a companion piece to the color photograph of President-Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins '01, which also came to the Club through the generosity of Mr. Bachrach.

At a hearing on Feb. 17 before the Fish and Game Committee of the N. H. House of Representatives, Rep. Robert S. Monahan of Hanover offered to withdraw the special student hunting license bill he had already filed, if the committee approved a $5.00 combination fishing and hunting license for "boarding students" as proposed by the N. H. Fish and Game Commission. Bob further stated that the combination license proposed by the Commission for boarding school students in the state would produce increased revenue from many students who cannot now afford the present non-resident hunting fee of $25.25; enable such students to take greater advantage of New Hampshire's recreational opportunities while attending schools, colleges and the university; and encourage them to return to New Hampshire for hunting and fishing when they can afford the higher nonresident license rates.

We have seen a photograph of the seniors on the Electoral Board at the Student Government Convention at Smith College and find there George Case's daughter Joan and Jack Gunther's daughter Nancy. We find that the Board includes representatives from various activities and from all four classes, and the 35 members are responsible for presenting the college with a slate of candidates for each of the four major offices of the student government. We wish that one of these fathers had been in the picture which would have permitted us, according to the MAGAZINE policy, to put the picture in with our notes.

Many fathers in the class will be interested to know that John Cornehlsen was responsible for the general supervision of and the preface to a book entitled "Guide to Career Information" which is published by the Career Information Service of New York Life Insurance Co.

Ralph Moulton, who began his career with United States Steel's American Bridge Division in 1930, has been appointed director of production planning in Pittsburgh. Ralph's previous position was senior assistant to the vice president - manufacturing operations.

H. C. Milton '28 has been appointed salesmanager, plastics and resins division, of theAmerican Cyanamid Co. He has been withthe company for more than 20 years.
