Adventures on the football circuit in the fall are always colorful, exciting and full of good fellowship. We see many classmates but it is no time for "interviews" and "note taking." Impressions are those of a parade - a "peerade" as we were accustomed to call it in the roaring Twenties. At the Brown game we caught a glimpse of the scholarly school administrator, Herm Richardson. Two weeks later in Cambridge we jumped on the tail board of Bill Andres' bandwagon - Bill was at the wheel and aboard were Kay Andres, Phil and Alice Mayher, Jack and Jerry Gunther, and your scrivener's wife, Ret.
The executive committee of the Class met at the Dartmouth Club in New York the night before the Yale game. Present were Chairman Bill Andres, Eddie Chinlund, our worthy Treasurer, Carter Strickland, the new Class agent, Duke Barto, editor of our newsletter, Herb Ball, arranger of the festivities, Dick Barrett, reunion chairman, Trunkie Brittan, Bing Carter, Al Benjamin, Jack Hubbard, Al Fisher, Jack Blair, Johnnie Pratt, Woody Woodbridge and your keeper of the records. Our honored and beauteous guest was Jan Woodbridge, who was devastatingly distractive to the great minds at work. Nevertheless, decisions were made to contribute funds to the College and to think about a gathering of "Twenty-Nine" in Hanover the weekend of a football game next fall. Ollie Holmes was cited for his contributions over the years to the well-being of the Class and to him will go a resolution of sincere thanks. Similar resolutions of thanks go to Chris Born, John Moxon, Jack Blair, and Dick Barrett, whose immediate past services as Secretary, Class Agent, Newsletter Editor, and Reunion Chairman, respectively, are greatly appreciated.
During the course of the Yale weekend, we saw, in addition to the above executiveminded classmates, our delightful host and hostess, Jack and Jerry Gunther, who live in New Canaan, Conn., Eddie (the unrivalled story-teller) and Betty Walsh, who graciously entertained us in Chappaqua, N. Y., Phil and Alice Mayher, Gerry and Marge Swope, and Bob and Jeannie Brinkerhoff. Gerry looks fine again, after a long siege of illness, and is back performing his duties in the legal department of the General Electric Company where he has charge of the legal aspects of the international affairs of the company. Bob Bririkerhoff is in the advertising business with the New York firm of Young and Rubicam, Inc.
Recently, we received a letter from BobHazard, proprietor of The Hereford Market in Hereford Monkton, Md. Bob writes that, due to illness, he sold his business and moved to the country to take up a slower way of life. He bought a country store and now works 72 hours a week. It is confining but he enjoys it. Bob has six grandchildren.
Dr. Arch Diack is practicing general surgery in Portland, Ore., having been there for 23 years. He has taught at the local medical school, has served as the president of the Medical Society and has been a member of the Grievance and Public Relations Committee of the State Society. Currently, he is head of a citizen's committee trying to elect a "qualified Coroner". His hobbies include fishing, farming, etching and inventing. He has patents on a folding table and a portable Chinese oven which "brings Trader Vic along on camping trips, cruises and picnics." The latter idea was born of a doctors' cooking and eating club, of which Arch is a charter member, known as the "Brain Soup Society." Arch finds time to make trips to Europe, Florida, Ann Arbor, and Boston. Arch and Fran have two daughters, Kitsy (tall, red-headed, lovely and a student at the University of Oslo), and Francy (not so tall but just as red-headed and lovely, who has spent two years at Mt. Holyoke College).
Another famous doctor, Ellie Cavanagh, of Northampton, Mass., just returned from attending the American College of Surgeons' meetings in San Francisco with his son, Jim, and their respective wives. Son Jim '51 is starting his fifth and final year of surgical residency on January 1 as Chief Surgical Resident at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1954, has a charming wife, Betsy, and three sons, making Ellie a staid old grandfather. Son John '55 is a teacher with an M.A. in history and is currently pursuing his studies for a Ph.D. at Duke University. Daughter Julie, aged twenty, is a senior at Bennington College. She spent her junior year at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Ellie and Marj keep busy with professional and civic activities and travel for relaxation. After the meetings in San Francisco, they went to the Hawaiian Islands. On the West Coast, they talked on the telephone with Bill and Marian Keyes, who live in La Conada, Calif., and who have a young son, Peter. Bill is with William R. Staats and Company of Los Angeles. Last year, Ellie and Marj vacationed with Phil and Caroline Fitzpatrick in the Virgin Islands. They, too, have recently reached the status of grandparents.
The doctors must be concerned about the news of your secretary because along comes another note from Dr. Art D'Elia - bless their old hearts. Art keeps Cape Codders alive and kicking. His son Arthur Jr., is a high school teacher and is studying for his M.A. at Boston University. Michael '59 is working for Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in Washington, D. C., and daughter, Maria, is a sophomore at Radcliffe College. Art reports that with a Presidential aspirant in their midst, the Cape Codders had an exciting summer. All is quiet again and his guess is that they have recovered their sense of objectivity.
A news release from the Nashua, N. H. Telegraph gives prominence to our DonJeffery, the president o£ the Community Chest. The picture of Agency Executives shows Don standing straight and stalwart.
Another release reports the establishment of the Harry H. Enders Memorial Loan and Scholarship Fund at Dartmouth College in memory of our beloved classmate. This fund was created by gifts from his widow, Constance, Young and Rubicam, Inc., and itsboard chairman, Sigurd S. Larmon '14, andwill provide financial aid for outstandingDartmouth undergraduates. Students willbe selected for awards on the basis of allround excellence, with particular emphasis oninitiative, imagination, leadership, and character. For a man who did so much to furtherthe ideals of the College, this fund is anenduring tribute.
In closing, we wish to convey the traditional season's greetings. Merry Christmasand a Happy New Year to you all.
