During the last month, excellent snow conditions around Hanover have attracted a number of the skiing "buffs" among our alumni. Observed in action at the Dartmouth Skiway (on the Papoose Trail, I believe) were Norm Fine EE'56, Larry Freier EE'58, and Fritz Geller TT'48. More sophisticateddevotees of the sport are Bill Fetzer TT'49and his wife, who stopped in Hanover aftera full week of skiing at Stowe, Vermont. From Winthrop, Mass., Harlan Jessup TT'56writes wistfully of the good skiing he hasbeen missing because of the USN and a verysmall son. Harlan will be a civilion again,in June.

In the 1958 Annual Report of the U.S.National Museum, the Thayer School is listedas a "Donor to the National Collection" asthe result of the donation of two railroadbridge models. The last display location ofthese items was in the second-year room atBissell Hall. Apparently the Museum wasnot interested in the "Hook Truss" whichonce hung on the third floor at Bissell, andwhich is now disassembled and in a box onthird floor of Cummings. Perhaps the problem of reconstructing this truss was too formidable a problem.

The February Issue of the Proceedings of The Institute of Radio Engineers is a special issue devoted to the nature of the ionosphere. As guest editor, in addition to co-authoring one of the papers, Professor Millett Morgan has made a major contribution to this important issue. In his editorial, Millett opens with the observation that Puck's jesting lines (from A Midsummer Night's Dream)

I'll put a girdle 'round the earth In forty minutes

has come within a factor of two-and-a-half of reality! Data in support of his observation is being gathered daily in Room 126, Thayer School, where a satellite tracking station is operated by Dr. Huntington Curtis with Fred Hart EE'59 as his assistant.

On March 5, Lawrence Farnham '23 visited the School to interview students interested in careers in the construction field. Larry is Assistant Treasurer of Turner Construction Company and is living in Newton, Mass.
