In late winter news, the Dartmouth varsity ski team placed third in the N.C.A.A. Championship meet held at Winter Park, Colorado. The Big Green skiers, who had won the championship the previous year, found the going rougher, particularly in the Nordic events, as they lost out to Denver Univesity and the University of Colorado. Art Bookstrom with a 4th in the slalom and Bth in the downhill, and Jim Delong with a 3rd in the slalom and 11th in the downhill were Dartmouth's top Alpine finishers. Captain Dick Taylor took Bth in jumping and 14th in cross country, with Fran Noel 9th in jumping and 12th in cross country to place well in Nordic competition.
Dartmouth's standout basketball star and captain, Rudy LaRusso, was a surprise second draft choice of the Minneapolis Lakers in the late winter N.B.A. player pool selection. LaRusso also was chosen and competed with the College All-Star Team in a post-season roundrobin tournament to select U.S. players for the Pan-American and Olympic team.
Two New Jersey boys were elected to captain the Dartmouth swimming teams. Tom Travis of Fair Haven was elected varsity captain for next season and Jerome Bentley of Westfield was chosen to lead the freshman swimmers. Travis is a fine freestyle swimmer, while Bentley is a standout record-holder in the butterfly event and also talented in freestyle events.
Former Dartmouth football coach D. O. "Tuss" McLaughry, now Director of Physical Education at the College, is serving as a member of the Honors Court of the Football Foundation and Football Hall of Fame.
