As in basketball, the varsity hockey team features an all-veteran starting unit. Thus far Dartmouth has lost only one game in seven played and has two Ivy League wins. However, the Ivy competition looks tougher than in basketball and Coach Eddie Jeremiah may well have some problems as the season rolls along.
Dartmouth's first line of Bobby Moore and Jake Haertl on the wings and Mike Hollern at center has accounted for most of the goals and assists to date, with Moore the top scorer with nine goals and five assists. Captain Rusty Ingersoll and Ryan Osterbo, stellar defensemen, have also scored well, and it was Ingersoll's breakaway in the last minute of the Yale game that gave the Indians a 4-3 win. Goalie Tom Wahman has performed extraordinarily well in all games to date and his saves have been another major factor in the team's success.
After a three-week layoff for Christmas, the Big Green opened against top-ranked Boston College in Boston and went down to defeat in a close 4-3 game. B.C. tallied the winning goal with just twelve seconds to go and it was a close battle all the way. Equally close was the Yale game. The Indians trailed 3-2 with five minutes remaining, but Bobby Moore scored on an assist from Ingersoll and then, with one minute of playing time remaining, Ingersoll stole the puck at mid-ice and broke down the ice to score unassisted to start Dartmouth on the Ivy League victory trail. Mike Hollern was the outstanding player against Middlebury, scoring two goals as Dartmouth edged past the Panthers by another 4-3 score.
In the most recent game against Princeton, the Indians proved Princeton right. The Tigers displayed signs before the home crowd which read "Dartmouth is the Ivy League team to beat," and the Big Green skaters won 4-1 as Captain Rusty Ingersoll scored two goals and set the pace on defense with some rugged body checking.
Dartmouth's third line of Phil Roy, Mike Butler and Jim Richards has shown great improvement in recent games. However, the Indians have looked sloppy in some games and there have been occasional defensive lapses which have been costly. If Coach Jeremiah can remedy these deficiencies, the Ivy League hockey crown should stay right in Hanover.
