The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Southern California hosted the Dartmouth Rugby Club during March and enjoyed meeting with and entertaining twenty wonderful young men of Dartmouth. The team proved a credit to the school and left a good won three, lost one record here on the coast.

Saturday March 21 they defeated the Universities Club 13-0 at the Rose Bowl. Two Dartmouth grads played against them in this game, Pete Reich '56 and Ron Roth '58 and their only comments following the game were, "These kids are too much!" Wednesday March 25 Dartmouth defeated San Diego State at San Diego, 8-0 and Saturday March 28 they unfortunately bowed to UCLA 14-6. It is highly possible that the toll of studio visits, Hollywood night life, The Bruin Belles and an evening in Tijuana proved sapping to the New England ruggers whereas the West coast team took all the glamor in stride. Monday March 30, the Association entertained the team at a Mexican luncheon before their departure for Pomona and evidently the spicy food snapped them into shape because the next day they swept through Pomona College 11-0. Following the UCLA game, a huge contingent met at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel for cocktails and in spite of having lost the game, there was no saddening of spirits among the assemblage.

President Dick Hefler '36, Pete Reich '56 and Dick Milliken '50 spent many hours insuring the success of this visit. One thousand tickets had to be sold to cover expenses and this meant night after night on the telephone merchandising ducats. Ferb Haight '21, John Lyman '28, Howie Almon '22, Jack Rourke '40, Steve Balkam '29, Bob Jackson '51, Ed (and mostly Sara) Ramsey '35, Don Des Combes '57 and Chuck Robinson '31 were some of the hardworking folks who helped get the team on the road. The Association owes them a vote of thanks. We'll have big things happening this summer in Southern Californiaville, so watch your mail. Dick Milliken stated after viewing his first scrum,

"I can always tell a rugby player, but not much."
