Names Wanted
To THE EDITOR:
I recently wanted to make a definitive list of all the Hanover restaurants and eating clubs that are affectionately and otherwise remembered by Dartmouth men. I tried the town offices thinking that perhaps in the files of the Board of Health records of such places might be kept. Unfortunately, the restaurants and eating clubs did not need permits until very recently.
I have approached some of my neighbors who have nostalgic interests and long memories and have gotten some names. I wonder whether there are readers of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE who would jot down the names of those eating places which flourished in their time. The names I have unearthed with the dates are:
Clubs Restaurants Dyke Club '20s Big Eats Cafe '20s Rood Club '30s The Campus Cafe '30s Ma Smalley's '20s-30s Bishop's Hawes Club '30s Schaeffer's Bowman Club '30s Plaid Pig '20s McKee's Club '30s Ashbel Hotel Bagley Club '20s Saia's '30s Gates House '20s Hal's '30s-50s Unity House '30s The Indian Head '30s The Tavern '20s Allen's Drug Store '30s Sweet Club '30s The Wigwam '20s-30s Robert's Club '20s Mac's '40s-50s Mrs. Morey's '20s Mrs. Paige's '20s
Some of these may not be quite accurate and I would appreciate any corrections. I'm not sure what use will be made of this information, but I would hate to see these fine and redolent old names disappear into the mists of our yesterdays. If those who can add more names will write to me at 39 College Street, Hanover, I'll send them copies of the definitive list as it grows.
