Well, if you missed it, I feel sorry for you, because it was a doozer! It will take at least until Wednesday to recover. It's strange that New Hampshire has such short nights!!!
You will find an attendance list at the end of this, and I apologize to the wives to whom I've referred as "Mrs." rather than by first names, but I simply didn't get them all written down, and it seems simpler this way. I apologize too to anyone I might have omitted, though there shouldn't be many. You can add the list up to its total of 131 men returnees which is outstanding attendance, especially for our class - and the accompanying families brought the grand total to over 275 people.
The weather did well by us, especially considering the week of rain preceding our affair. Only en route up Friday afternoon and while we banqueted Saturday evening did the dew fall, and then it interrupted very little. Hanover is beautiful in the spring, and nostalgia dripped far faster than rain - all over the place.
Events ran well on schedule thanks to the excellent plans made by the Reunion Committee headed by Jay Urstadt and aided by Skip Muller, Tom Swartz, Bob Alden, JohnAdler, John Sweetland, Dick Moulton, and especially Mike McGean. This gang is to be vastly applauded by all of us for a sensational job.
Also to be applauded are Hiose who travelled-afar such as Ort Hicks (Oslo, Norway), Gus Farnsworth (California), Bob Priester and Jim Krentler (Colorado), and Lou Clarke (Kansas). Loyalty runs even further for such as those men.
Friday's activities were primarily tent-bound, such as a buffet and continuous-tap running Arrivals were at all hours, and it was an evening to renew acquaintances and try to guess what various names went with various faces. One aid to this was a room-number list edited by the College and distributed. This at least gave you 90-odd names from which to choose if you were fumbling around trying to introduce someone to your wife.
Saturday's Class Meeting was surprisingly well-attended (considering hours kept night before), and the results you will find below. The Class Picture followed this on campus, and then we went to a buffet luncheon at the Gym, attended by all reuning classes. Awards were made at this for attendance, etc., and then athletics took over until cocktail hour at College Hall. In Softball, the undefeated Class of 1949 team continued so (for another five years) by outlasting a Coaches' Team, organized by Commissioner John Sweetland (he even forsook us to play for them). In truth, we were magnificently coached by me, Coach Casey Zeiser, and we outnumbered them about 4-1. So all we had to do was keep platooning our 35 men until the sun wilted the nine-man opposition. This took us two hours and fourteen innings to do, but we made it 16-13. won't try to name all participants, but the only few I can quickly recall who are still in shape are brothers Bert Rodman, Chet Marinelli, Nellie Abrahamsen, Brud Becker, and Ort Hicks. Equally proficient but horribly unconditioned were ex-heroes Maury Cole, Tom Swartz,Paul Erwin, Ted Krug, Carl Tracy, BobPriester, King Ball, Harvey Nolan, Bob Swift, and yours truly. For instance, Priester hit a 600-foot home-run and almost got nipped at the plate - he then retired for a two-inning rest.
The excellent cocktail hour preceded the banquet (and beat a violent rainstorm by ten minutes). At the banquet, Honorary classmate Thad Seymour gave an excellent address, completely capturing fans despite his own admission of Princeton attendance twelve years ago. He is an immensely amusing and versatile gentleman. After dinner, all returned to a "wild" combo sextet at the tent either directly or after attending a college play in Webster Hall. This tent activity lasted until 3 A.M. and capped off Saturday.
Sunday's sign-off was a buffet brunch at Mike McGean's backyard in Norwich, equally well handled. Then we departed our various ways, wishing it hadn't ended.
To get back to the Class Meeting results, this is what took place: We voted to retain class dues at five dollars per year. We voted to purchase a large class banner for future events such as football outings and reunions. Dave Vanderhoof initiated a hand-to-hand collection of fifty cents per head for this, and we soon had enough. We voted to have our next class function at the Yale game in the fall - mark this down - we will definitely have a class get-together then, in the hands of a committee of John Daukas, Pete Bloodsworth, and Bob Barnaby. We passed a new Class-organization constitution which sets up four class officers instead of three. (All other classes have it.) We then elected new officers who were proposed by Nominating Chairman Bob Alden. They are as follows: Chairman, me (I would have thought you had learned your lesson); Secretary, Carl Struever; Treasurer, Al Wagner; Agent, Dick Bandfield. These men will (for better or for worse) guide class destinies until next Reunion along with the following Executive Committee: Bob Alden, King Ball, Brud Becker,Mike McGean, Ray Rasenberger, Bert Rodman, John Stearns, Tom Swartz, Zeke Thurlow, Ray Truncellito, and Jay Urstadt (several of these eleven men are re-elected).
I am writing this last column only because I had all the supplies here, and it must be back in Hanover this week. But from here on, you'll be relieved to know that CarlStruever will replace my drivel with his brighter and fresher approach to literary perfection.
Thanks for your support in the past, and may I urgently appeal to you to support Class Activities in the future. We start the
"new regime" with a solvent treasury (thanks to 412 of you last year) and vast enthusiasm (thanks to a vastly-successful Tenth Reunion). We will work for you all the way and with your support will bring our many-sided class together as years go by. We cannot succeed, however, unless you help.
One thing that I should not omit - by the time you read this you will have received the new Class Directory, edited and compiled by Carl Struever. He has done a fabulous job (he even volunteered to do so, just as he did for our Fifth Reunion), and we owe him a deep debt of gratitude. The cost will be (and I'm proud to say can be) borne by the Class Treasury. I hope you enjoy the Directory. Thanks again, Carl.
