As I sat down to write these notes, I got to thinking about Hanover, the good times we've had at formal and informal reunions over the last few years. That brought music to mind, and music is always associated with my good friend, Charlie Truman. So what did I do? I went to the phone and told the operator to get me 95-M in Hanover, N. H. Charlie was on the other end of the wire and I told him to hang on. Then I got the banjo and played some of the numbers we gave out with last June: Memories, the theme song of the Redoubtable Four; Shanty Way Down in ShantyTown; Margie; and a song that my seat mate on the Erie makes with the joke. He'll ask, "Did you read about the head that was floating down the Cuyahoga river?" You'll plead ignorance, then he'll come back with, "It was singin' I Ain't Got Nobody." Charlie said everything was fine around Hanover, and he was looking forward to next June when some of us, no doubt, will be back for another looksee at the old familiar scenes.
Some of the lads have hit Hanover this fall. Prior to the Harvard game, which must have been quite an affair, Dr. and Mrs. Bill Holier of Worcester, Mass., put up at the Inn. I wonder if Ben Dudley and his frau were there at the same time. They usually are. Russ Pettengill and his wife were there from New Hope, Pa. Not much has been heard from Russ since our 40th. He must be laying low. Deacon andMrs. Graves came from their retirement spot in Webster, N. Y. Dick Wing and the Mrs., from S. Dartmouth, Mass. A card from JockAdams reported that he and his wife Marion and son Eddie, with Bert and Hazel French, from Branford, Conn., and Sandwich, Mass., respectively, took in the Harvard game. He ran across Inge Fearing, Chet Brett, and MikeFarley, who were there with their wives, and he said that Plum and Ella Leighton were in town.
Mention of the Frenches brings to mind a piece from a little publication printed by St. John's Episcopal Church, Winthrop, Mass., sent to me by Scout Al Newton. On the first page was an ovation by the rector to Lucy French Morey, Bert's daughter, who was retiring as organist and choirmaster after fifteen years of "faithful service." Lucy was highly praised. An informal reception was given in her honor.
What Jim Mathes '11, the advertising tycoon, said in a letter had ought to make the '09ers stick their chests out. I'm quoting:
"I never saw so many good looking young fellows as the members of your class. Really I was surprised at the youth they displayed. As far as I'm concerned, it is 10 o'clock to bed. You guys seemed to sit up all night (and your Scotch was no better than ours - because ours was Johnnie Walker)
Jim was referring to the reunion. You can readily see why he's such a success in his chosen field.
It was disconcerting news that twelve members of the Class of '10 had passed on to their final reward, since reunion in June. This word was given me by my West Coast correspondent who prefers to remain anonymous. That's a big shock, but who can tell when a person's number will be called?
President Ike isn't the only one who's had a heart attack. Less publicized was the second coronary suffered by Mike Readey. He spent a week under an oxygen tent, was given shots in that portion of his anatomy that he sits on "with a 'harpoon,' " as Mike puts it, then was fed a diet of pills, and after he left was told to stay quiet at home for four weeks or so. From his last report, the doctors told him he was doing all right. Take it easy, son, follow orders, and you'll be with us a long time.
Not having heard any stories from B. Matthew Scully for a matter of months (in fact, no word of any kind has been received, and I'm wondering if he's OK), this one told by Mike may tickle the risibilities of some of you birds: These two guys were walking along one day and spotted a sign on a building that said "Crematory." Being curious, Charlie said to Tom (the names are as good as any), "Crematory, what's that?" Tom said, "I don't know, but I'll go in and find out."
It wasn't long before Tom came out on his ear and Charlie said, "Well, what was it?" Tom replied, "There was a big room with people sitting around and a man reading from a book. I only asked, 'What's cookin'?' and then it happened."
There's nothing more cookin' this trip, except that Lana, the glamor puss, got into a cat fight and got her face all scratched up. She's resting comfortably on my bed at the present time. And so we'll put this piece to bed, making it a little shorter than usual on account of a request from Affable Charlie Widmayer, editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, who is publishing with each class notes a list of donors to the Alumni Fund. In the next issue I may tell you about a skunk party, but for now a Merry Christmas to one and all and the kind of New Year you'd all like to have.
