Sunday, June 14, was Commencement Day for Dartmouth College, officially speaking, but in the eyes of many it was Dean Joe McDonald's Day. The beloved Dean of the College, who retires July 31, received Dartmouth's honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and was the recipient also of affectionate tribute from those present. As the white hood of Doctor of Humane Letters slipped over the Dean's head, the entire graduating class rose in a body and gave him a thunderous ovation. Joe McDonald undoubtedly counted this a greater tribute than the L.H.D. that now appears after his name.
Dean McDonald was escorted by President Dickey in the academic procession.
The Dean hands out diplomas for the last time.
After the exercises at Baker he visited Dick's House to give diplomas to Thomas L. Cooper 59 (shown) and other seniors confined to the infirmary.

With Associate Dean Eugene Hotchkiss '50 and Dean-Elect Thaddeus Seymour, Dean McDonald waits at Webster Hall for the seniors to return from Class Day so he can conduct a rehearsal.
The Dean made five speeches during the reunion period. Here he is shown in Thayer Hall telling the Alumni Council about one of the comic student escapades that enlivened his seven-year term of office.

On the campus on Class Day the Dean chats with the parents of a graduating senior.
