Eliminated from the Ivy League title race, the Big Green continued to fight for the first division with well-earned wins over Columbia and Cornell. Dartmouth title hopes for this year were shattered by Harvard and Yale, which managed to handcuff the Big Green offense.

Quarterback Jack Kinderdine and halfback Al Rozycki continued to dominate the headlines. Rozycki's rushing ability placed him ahead of all Ivy League ground-gainers, and Kinderdine's passing ranked him as one of the best in Dartmouth history. As of this writing, Kinderdine needs only five more pass completions to break the all-time record of 75 set by Bill Beagle '56 in 1954.

Captain Ken DeHaven continued to spearhead the line, which received its share of injuries in recent weeks. Guards Chuck Chapman and Hank Gerfen have both been nursing injuries, along with ends Connie Persels, Dave Usher and John Henry and tackle Mike Mooney. Persels and Mooney returned for the Yale game but were hurt again and are now out for the season.

The Princeton game will mark the end of the trail for twelve Indians, including Kinderdine, DeHaven, Rozycki, Gerfen, Chapman, tackle Jim McElhinney, and fullback Dick Marrone.

Coming from behind in almost every game, the '64 football team rolled up one of the most impressive records in freshman football history with an undefeated season. Coach Earl Hamilton's team beat a previously unbeaten B.U. frosh team in the season finale, 28-7.

Phil Madden threw two touchdown passes against the Terrier Pups and Ron Schram and Dick Bower one each. The three took their turn at quarterback in place of Dana Kelly, who was sidelined with a leg injury.

The '64s should add a great deal of potential to next year's varsity eleven.

Soccer

Season Record: Won 5, Lost 6

After a poor start, the Big Green soccer team began, to gain momentum, winning four out of its last six games. The team became the first since 1955 to win five games in one season.

Against Ivy League competition, the Green made an even better showing with a 4-3 record and a third-place finish in the standings. This year's squad became the first soccer team since 1946 to beat Harvard and Yale in the same season.

One of the men responsible for the Green's late season drive is sophomore goalie Dave Smoyer. He broke into the starting lineup against Yale and from that time on was the Indian goal tender. In the final four games of the season he allowed only three goals.

Coach Whitey Burnham, in his first year at the soccer helm, had Jack Stobo and Skip Mattoon, both sophomores, at the fullback position; Dave Blake, a senior, Don Wertz, a sophomore, and Dave Smith, a junior, at halfback; and a forward line of Steve Chase, a sophomore, Hugh Johnson and Jerry Pepper, both juniors, and Larry Holden and Jack Zabriskie, seniors. As can be seen, Coach Burnham will have a good group of men returning for next year.

Coach Ab Oakes '56 has seen his freshman soccer team put together one of the finest records in many years. The '64s opened the season with four straight wins and after two setbacks, finished with three more wins.

Center Ivars Bebris was a standout on offense and Pete Thomsen saw a great deal of action in the goal.

Cross Country

Harvard 25, Dartmouth 32 Dartmouth 23, Boston University 34 Heptagonals - 9th Place Season Record: Won 1, Lost 4

The Green harriers closed a poor season with a ninth-place finish in the Heptagonals. Dartmouth's number one runner, Tom Laris, still not up to form, finished a disappointing 30th and Nick Jennison finished 29th. Both at the start of the season were hampered by leg injuries.

Boston University was the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal schedule. Coach Ellie Noyes, however, can look to next season with an optimistic viewpoint as all of this year's runners were either juniors or sophomores.

Besides Laris and Jennison returning next year, there will also be Dud Halligan, Bill Obershain, Dan Tompkins, Pete Wells and Roy Benson.

Freshman Cross Country

Harvard 22, Dartmouth 37 Dartmouth 23, Boston University 34 Mt. Hermon 23, Dartmouth 33 Season Record: Won 1, Lost 4

With only one win to its credit, the freshman cross-country team closed out its season with a hard-luck loss to Mt. Hermon. With team captain Jeff Burnham sidelined with an injury, Ken Sack attempted to take up the slack and ran his best race of the season. His win, however, was not enough, as only one other Green runner, Dave Putnam, finished in the top seven. Putnam was fourth.

Coach Ellie Noyes' '64 team has also included Derick Denby, Eric Thompson, and John Larson.
