Mo Kaufman '55, shown above "on location," has returned from northern Canada, where he headed a successful geological expedition into the Arctic barrens of the Northern Canadian Shield. The purpose of the expedition, which had the backing of the Canadian government, was to cover some 6,000 square miles of land for indications of base or precious metal deposits. Several very excellent base metals and gold deposits were discovered, and it is hoped that diamond drilling will reveal these deposits to be extensive enough to mine.

The expedition used helicopters to cover the large area along the northwest shore of Hudson's Bay. Promising areas were mapped on the ground and their contents tested. Mo feels, that due to the success of the expedition, this method of mineral exploration will be used again in other shield areas where vegetation is sparse.

Kaufman, who majored in geology at Dartmouth and took his M.S. in that field at the University of Minnesota, is now with the Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd., in Canada. Earlier he was with Kennecott Copper Corp. and also did uranium mining in New Mexico with Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corp.
