INSTEAD OF FIGHTING other men, they fought high winds, steep trails, blizzards, and, in one instance, a bear. Instead of carrying guns, they carried chain saws and axes. Six Dartmouth veterans of World War II's 10th Mountain Division returned to Dartmouth to erect a lookout on Mt. Moosilauke. The

site is dedicated to all the Dartmouth men who gave their lives in the war. The 10th may be best known not for its considerable brawn but for its brains: with an average I.Q. of 140, it claimed to be the most intelligent infantry division in history.

While the veterans reported a successful Moosilauke reunion, one of their helpers almost found himself in unintentional combat. Chuck Wooster '89, walking ahead of the group, found himself face to face with a bear. "It greatly speeded his descent," said organizer Jay Evans '49.
