To you who may read this I wish to cry for mercy as I am really sacrificing myself to get this ready for next month's column. How? Well tonight is New Year's Eve. In fact in another couple of hours that magic hour of twelve will be here and though I may have that same rocky feeling that many of you will also have tomorrow morning, I am afraid that mine will be due to the rock and roll of this "Tin Can" (destroyer, to you landlubbers) and not to that bright sparkling liquid which you so enjoyed this night. I can't complain though for X am only about fifty miles off the coast of Bermuda and though I can't say anything for the calmness of the seas here at least the weather is nice and warm.

WEDDING BELLS

The 28th of December was the magic day for Dave Duclos and his new wife, Johanna Dunlop, with the wedding taking place in Duluth, Minn. One day earlier George Carlson, a fellow Navy Ensign, took the fatal step when he and Sally Matherson exchanged vows in Boston, Mass. George is presently attending the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Ga.

Kent Neilson and his new bride as of November 27, Barbara Eaton, were married in Winchester, Mass., and will be living in Boston following their honeymoon. One wedding which I knew would be coming soon was that of Tom Waterman and Julie Ann Wark and thus with no surprise I am pleased to announce they are man and wife as of November si. Tom is currently employed by Uncle Sam as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and is presently serving aboard a Hydrographic Survey Ship out of San Francisco while he and Julie are living in San Leandro.

I can't get over the scarcity of weddings I now have to write about but I guess the trend has to slow down sometime. The last group in this section to be mentioned are those who have let themselves be trapped into engagement. One I certainly overlooked before is that of Dave Cohen who is engaged to Vida Joyce Freedman, a Smith '59er, who weathered two Winter Carnivals with Dave in Hanover. Dave is currently attending Columbia University seeking the M.A. degree in English Literature.

WHAT'S UP?

Several very interesting and news-filled letters have arrived in my mail box these past several weeks and have thus enabled me to add more news. I certainly hope the response keeps up as it sure is a help to me.

First I find that Duke Bligh has kept on with the old grind and is attending Columbia University's School of Business Administration. Studying at Harvard University's graduate schools are also a large number of 59's and I hope I have a complete list; FredBacon, Pat Burns, Rock Gerber, Burton Herman, Joel Kaswell, Barry Mahoney, MikeMiller, Mark Whitman, David Yarosh, and Pan-Nyong Yi.

I received a very nice letter from Lou Gerber who is a Lieutenant in the Army and is currently assigned to the Public Information Office on the Fort Lee Army post in Virginia. His job is concerned with quite a bit of writing and layout work for the "Fort Lee Traveller," a weekly newspaper, and some radio work on various Army-sponsored programs. Finally he has also entered his talent into the field of the theater and is holding down one of the leads in the production, "Sabrina Fair." It looks to me like that Army life is really tough. Come the end of January Lou will be getting out of active duty. He also mentioned that he, Pete Paxson and Mike Hurd had quite a weekend for themselves in Washington, D. C. Pete is working for Armstrong Cork in Philadelphia and Mike is in Baltimore with Pittsburgh Plate Glass.

You who were so fortunate to have read Randy Malin's great news letter (November 23 - No. 1, Vol. 1) should have noticed he mentioned that Rob Killgore was not going to let his little sister (now Mrs. BobWatson) outdo him and thus became engaged; well that competition still seems to be existing for I believe that before many of you have read this that he and Pat Pollnow will have been married.

One final marriage mentioned by Lou was that of Dick Johnson and Anne Frick of Erie, Penna., in August. Dick I believe is now working for Inland Steel as an operations trainee. The final engagement I have to announce for this month's dissertation is that of Stu Davis and Leslie Gardner who announced this event in mid-November.

Continuing on my search around the U.S. for '59ers we find that Kent Shinbach is in Philadelphia at the Jefferson Medical School; Fred Scriber has joined the Coast Guard; Jacques Lucien Bry has enrolled as a member of the June 1960 (witness my advance news) class of the American Institute for Foreign Trade, Phoenix, Ariz. Specializing in Latin America, Bry is taking the school's intensive training course in preparation for a career in American business or government abroad.

UNCLE SAM

Risking a great deal of repetition I will give you all a list of those people who have just recently (three months ago) made the great and glorious grade of Ensign in the Navy; Richard Dunnells, Herb Gray, Pete Collins, Harry Downing, Pete Vultee, Jim Rex, Brut Hedges, and Barlow Nelson.

Speaking of Barlow Nelson, it was so kind of him to drop me a Christmas card and from this I find that he is currently in the Special Services section of the Navy and is in training for the 1960 Winter Olympics. His tryouts will come late this month (January) in Seattle and if successful will end him up in Squaw Valley in February. Good luck, Barlow!

Other news from the Navy finds that Bob Weston has made his first solo flight and the Air Force informs us that Bob Nelson as of October has started his initial flying training to take place at Moore A. B., Tex. On the Army side of things we find that Kent Rickenbaugh was recently assigned to the Transportation Corps, at Fort Eustis, Va., and I can't help but wonder at what has taken the place of the old Theta Delt roof.

Back to the Navy side of things I heard from Bill Duggan the other day and find that Les Larsen is at the Naval Communications School in Newport and both NormSwanson and Bill Brigiani are on board the "Newport. News," a nice large cruiser and are looking forward to a seven-month Mediterranean cruise starting in January.

Well that ends my accumulation of news for this month and as you can see a great deal of it has come from letters written by you "wonderful" people, thus making my job much more enjoyable and productive. Thanks again and 'til next month enjoy yourself - Horse.
