So that mail would not be strewn all over the Mediterranean, Harry Shaw wisely left his secretarial tasks behind when he sailed away with the Navy this summer. Craig Harlan will take over starting with the November issue and carry on until Harry returns. Interrupt Craig's furniture sales whenever you can with class news, and look for Phi Belt gossip to inflate these pages, at least until Harry sends back all the other items which unavoidably went with him to the Mediterranean.
For now, I'll try to fill in on what I've heard one way or another over the summer as Debby and I camped our way across the United States. We attended the wedding of Jim Wooster and Betsy Hendry at Glenridge, N. J., in June and were joined by Skeff Mc-Allister, Randy Malin and three '59s in the wedding party, Ray Becker, Mike Kistler and John Allbee. Skeff and Randy joined up with Uncle Sam shortly after and just happened to land together at Fort Dix in the same barracks on the same floor. As Skeff said in a recent letter, "Misery loves company." We'll have a more complete report in Randy's Fifty-nine Line.
Becker followed Wooster's example and married Rita Warren in Salina, Kan., on August 13. Today, September 10, as I write this, Bill Pettway is signing his life away to Sue Walden in Midway, Ky., and his SAE brother Bob Morris is saying his vows to Anne Bowden in Greenwich, Conn. Wooster and Allbee will again be in their familiar helping roles as best man and usher.
In the engagement department, "better late than never" is the official acknowledgment o£ John Baldwin's plans to marry Mary Houk on December 27. Johnny has been studying and working year round at Cal Tech along with George Seielstad who occasionally takes off on his motorcycle, so I hear (don't know about the fate of his dog Max), but none of this is. positive as George's pen has been silent.
The western trip brought us in contact with Al and Sally Brown in Oakland, Calif., where they inhabit a colorful adobe apartment building. Al sticks fairly close to home as supply officer on his ship anchored at Treasure Island in San Francisco harbor. When Al sails Sally and other wives used to follow from port to port along the coast, often meeting John Hessler and others in San Diego. They managed to attend Mark Gates' wedding in the early summer in the Los Angeles area. The last I heard, Mark and his bride were living for awhile in Hawaii.
Baby news is sparse. Greg and Sandy Holthusen have a new little hopeful for 1980 commencement, and a roundabout source has it that John and Nancy Marsh have, or will have at any moment, a third member of their family.
That's all I can dig up. I apologize for not including more but that will have to wait for Craig's column in the months to come Thank you all for a good showing in the' Alumni Fund Drive. Those who gave, gave much. What we need is more participation Keep the news coming. Have a good year.
