Once again spring is here, - at least according to the calendar. One sometimes wonders however whether the weatherman is not working with a different calendar than the one used for deadlines for filing income tax returns. But be patient, folks. It may take a little extra prodding with the favorite fertilizer but eventually the azaleas will blossom forth with regal splendor.

There is one thing the weatherman cannot deter this time of year, at least for the young folks. Already the wedding bells are pealing loudly for many blissful couples. Rumor has it that a renowned Hollywood screen writer and a chic film actress are contemplating taking the fatal plunge. Deborah Kerr's chums are predicting that she will marry Pete Viertel in mid-July, in Europe, probably in Switzerland.

Another behind-the-scenes luminary in the entertainment world has just circularized an appeal to an industry plagued by "Payola" and congressional investigations to clean house a bit. Bob Lawrence, a leading producer of television commercials, has urged advertising managers and agency executives to place more emphasis and spend more money on creativity in the production of television commercials and less on such

"jazzy substitutes" as the gimmick, quantity, and noise. Currently producing in New York, Hollywood and Toronto, Robert Lawrence Productions recently made a major expansion move in affiliating with RKO General Inc., a division of the General Tire and Rubber Company.

This time next year preparations for our Twentieth Reunion will be in the final stages of completion, particularly since Snuffy and Fran Smith are now back in Hanover, where they can serve as overseers, as they did so ably five years ago. Already many are looking forward to their return to Hanover for this gala occasion. Bill Hammond is sure to be on hand. When he was in New York a short time ago, he made preliminary inquiries about the reunion dates so as to be sure not to miss it. Bill is sales manager of the Waterbury, Conn., office of the Anaconda Metal Hose Division of The. American Brass Company. Before receiving this well-deserved promotion two or three years ago, Bill was a salesman for the same company in Detroit.

Two other classmates to recently climb another rung on the ladder o£ success were Ray Hayes and Seth Fitchet. Ray, now a resident of Holden, Mass., has been elected an officer of State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America. In 1958 Ray was named manager of his company's sickness and accident claim department law division. Seth, manager of one of the two Cleveland, Ohio, offices of the world's largest brokerage firms, Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, has become a vice-president and voting stockholder of the firm. Seth came to Cleveland two years ago after serving for six years as manager of this firm's Phoenix, Ariz., office.

Two of our classmates prominent in the field of philanthropic endeavors, were recently elected to positions of distinction. Rob Barr is now a member of the Board of Trustees of Brooklyn Hospital. Bob O'Brien was elected to the General Board of Directors of the Boston YMCA. Bob is a vice-president of the insurance concern of Marsh and McLennan, Inc.

At the February annual meeting of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston, Bob was designated to represent one of the suburban clubs, the Mystic Valley Club, on the Executive Committee of the parent association. Mindful of the stellar work being done by our Boston classmates in alumni activities, the Boston Association entrusted its continued success to three other 41'rs in addition to Bob. Dick Hill was elected a vicepresident of the Association for the year 1960-1961. Ez Crowley was chosen the National Enrollment Chairman for the North Shore Ed Martin was designated to represent his Charles River Club on the Executive Committee of the parent association.

Similar responsibilities were recently entrusted to Harry Douty, George Baine and Charlie Schlenker by the Dartmouth Club of Monmouth County, N. J. Harry is the new President for the next year. George and Charlie were reelected to the Executive Committee, posts for which were originally selected two years ago.

There is very little to add to Lew Johnstone's recent praise of Bruce Friedlich and build-up of Pete Scott, our new Class Agent, but to urge that Lew's appeal for support of Pete's gigantic undertaking be met with 100% generous participation in the Alumni Fund Campaign.
