Last call to all to make final plans now to attend our Twentieth Reunion in Hanover from June 16 to June 18. The initial response to Reunion Chairman Bob Taft's inquiry as to who was definitely or probably going to be on hand for this historic event was terrific but during the last month or so those still unheard from have been a bit lax in indicating their intentions. The essential prerequisite for any successful affair is through prior planning. Bob's hands are tied in this regard unless everyone cooperates by replying promptly to all information solicited by him. We hope that with every passing day more and more classmates are deciding to return to the banks of the Connecticut in June. If this be the case, please let Bob know about it. Bob reports that many of the gang are planning to bring their broods to Hanover in June, by necessity or otherwise. That's wonderful! The more the merrier! Besides there is nothing like giving the clan a glimpse of the Hanover scene early in life, particularly the potential freshmen. If Arnold Bartlett's family is going to be on hand, our Reunion Chairman had better hustle up another class tent in a hurry. Arnold has ten children. Compelled by financial necessity to get in the higher brackets early in life, Arnold recently won himself the well-deserved promotion from principal of Hingham High School, Hingham, Mass., to Acting Superintendent of Schools. He became a member of the Hingham School System in 1958, after serving three years as Principal of Sharon High School. He previously served as Principal of Sanborn Seminary in Kingston, N.H.; head of the English Department of Chicago Latin School, and as an English and mathematics teacher in New Hampshire schools.
A couple of our legal lights have also forged into the higher echelons recently. Clint Reynolds of Worcester, Mass., was recently elected Second Vice-President and Assistant Treasurer of the Massachusetts Protective Association Inc. and the Paul Revere Life Insurance Co. The MPA-Paul Revere organization has had the benefit of Clint's services for the last twelve years. He was in the Legal Department from 1948 to 1959 when he was made Assistant Treasurer and Assistant Secretary. Dick Horn has been named Director of the Land Acquisition program for the city of Cleveland, Ohio, in which capacity he will be responsible for the purchase of land for municipal projects. Dick has been an Assistant Law Director for the city since 1953, specializing in port control and tax matters.
Congratulations are in order for Don Lade, who has been named general sales manager of Standard Steel Works, a division of Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation at Burnham, Pa. Don joined B-L-H in 1955 as a sales engineer for Standard Steel Works in the New York-New England area. Following World War II and prior to becoming affiliated with Standard Steel, he had sales experience with the United States Steel Corp. and the Taylor-Wharton Iron and Steel Company, a division of Harsco Corp. Don and wife Barbara have two daughters and a son at their home in Reedsville, Pa.
A commercial produced by Robert Lawrence Productions of New York, masterminded by Bob Lawrence, has been awarded the New York Art Directors' Club 1961 gold medal. The subject of this award was the Karmann Ghia Volkswagen.
The daily perusal of the Wall Street Journal occasionally reaps dividends, and I am not referring to stock dividends. Once in awhile choice bits of information are gleaned from the "Who-Done-It" column - such as a couple of recent scoops on Tom Willers and Dusty Rodes. Tom was recently elected Executive Vice-President of Hooker Chemical Corp. Not too long ago he received a promotion to the post of Vice-President in charge of the International Division. Prior to accepting the position of President of General Motors Institute in August 1960, Dusty was a member of the Board of Directors of Central Illinois Light Co. Dusty has promised to definitely be on hand for Reunion.
Our good will ambassador. Bob Taft, recently teamed up with Bob Nissen and Bill Sleepeck in Chicago, to give Danny Provost a brief respite from his nightmares generated by the "Untouchables." Bob is shipping his family to Europe in June to assure unrestrained enjoyment of reunion festivities. Dan promises to be on hand to grace us with his interpretation of the last utterances of Mumbles Mozzarella. Bill hopes to be present, provided his printing business does not come up with any last-minute deadlines.
During another sortie into the Wild Blue Yonder, Bob encountered John Everett at the Atlanta, Ga., airport. John is planning to make the June "hop" from Nashua to Hanover. Lou Young, Hugh Ken worthy, Bob O'Brien, Bill Hotaling, Frank Simpson, Stu Steffey, Don Stillman, Steve Winship, Jim Vaughan, Dick Pace, Dana Chase and Robb Alexander, are among the many others that have indicated to date that they definitely will be among the celebrators. If everyone displayed the enthusiasm for returning to Reunion evidenced by Dana and Robb, we would be assured of a record turnout. Dana is coming all the way from California and Robb is coming from Utah.
May is the month for the return of ardent alumni to Hanover for attendance at the annual conclaves sponsored by the College and its associated schools. Last May Bob Barr attended the joint meeting of the Thayer School Board of Overseers and the Executive Committee of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers to discuss trends in engineering education, Dartmouth's engineering program and the role of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers in these areas. Bob is an "old pro" when it comes to engineering problems, being the president of the renowned New York City building construction concern of Barr and Barr, Inc.
This month some of our class officers will be returning to Hanover for the last time during their present tenure of office to attend the Class Officers weekend.
