The prognosticators have just sung their swan song and will fade into oblivion for four years. Everyone got into the act recently, most of them with astonishing degrees of inaccuracy. It must be contagious because I have the urge to commence this column with a prediction of "things to come." If the attendance of 41ers at the Dartmouth-Yale game is a "fair sample" of the turnout that will be on hand for our big Twentieth Reunion in Tune, it will be a whopper. 41ers were swarming all over the Bowl, proudly displaying Kennedy and Nixon buttons, and drinking in the sunshine, blended with schnapps. Too bad that a few of them, like Sandy Courier and Stu May, could not have been down on the gridiron.
Dr. Sandy was on from Cincinnati visiting his wife's folks in Great Neck, N. Y, so he decided to journey to New Haven with his son to see the Big Green in action. Audrey May picked up Stu at the airport on his return from a business venture for a quick trip to the Bowl and then on to Darien, Conn., for dinner with Hank and Carol Childs and Buzz Willis, who were also present. Frankand Sue Hall stopped off en route to the annual convention of the Financial Public Relations Association in Boston, detouring to attend the usual post-game festivities at the Connecticut summer home of Bruce andKathy Friedlich, along with Bob and WinnieTepper, Dick and Polly Hill, Don and PatStifiman and Dan and Baillie Provost A lot of "old roomies" got together for the first time in many years. Bob and Barbara Harvey journeyed from Washington, D. C., and Dr.Frank and Henny Walters from nearby West Hartford to talk over "old times" with Frank and Sue Hall. Agnes and I had. the pleasure of netting together for a few minutes for the first time since graduation with one of my roommates and his better half, Don andBarb Lade.
Bob and Alice Taft introduced three of their children to Ivy League football, as did Oscar Israel, who was on hand with his two sons Also present were Don and Jane Hagen,Felix Lilienthal, Bill Steele, Joe Ozanne,Phil Hall, Ed Fell, Pete Coombs, Dick Spillane, George Seel, and Chuck Bolte. Please excuse my failure to acknowledge the presence of other classmates not observed by my scouts and myself. Undoubtedly theie were some others present and accompanied by wives and children.
Lew Johnstone returned to Cincinnati from a recent business trip to New York via Hanover, to take in the Holy Cross game, where he discussed reunion plans with Snuffy Smith and saw Ez Crowley in the distance. Dick and Polly Hill also took in the Harvard game. They have recently moved into a new home overlooking the ocean at Marblehead Neck, Mass.
Bill Hotaling, for years a "big gun" in alumni activities in and around New Haven, recently moved to Pennsylvania to assume his new duties as assistant manager of plates sales for Bethlehem Steel Company at its home office in Bethlehem. Upon his graduation from college, Bill Joined Bethlehem's loop course and was assigned to the sales department. From May' 1943 until a year later, he was assigned to the Operating Department as an expediter in the armor plate division. After his return from Army Service in World War II, a portion of which was spent in the company of yours truly touring Poland and Germany on foot as a prisoner of war, Bill returned to Bethlehem Steel Company in the home office sales division. In May 1946 he was transferred to the New Haven office. Bill's new residence is in Center Valley, Penna.
The '41 family is still growing, thanks to the recent contribution of a couple of guys out Cleveland way. During the summer ArtSpoeneman sired his fifth child and Al Hutton his fourth. The count for Art is now three girls and two boys, and for Al three girls and a boy. Art is presently with Taylor and Bogges Foundry Company and Al is one of the big shots with Sam W. Emerson Company, industrial builders.
Another father of five children, HarryDouty, was recently appointed to Board of Education of the Rumson-Fair Haven, N. J., Regional High School. A good man for the job, particularly since he is also active in Dads, Inc. and a deacon of his church. With that kind of experience, he certainly should win by an overwhelming majority when he runs for election in February for the two-year unexpired term to which he was appointed. Harry is the executive vice-president of Siegmund Werner Company of Bloomfield, manufacturers of sporting goods.
Another New Jersey "sparkplug," Dave McKinney, was recently appointed Marketing Manager of Rossotti Lithograph Corporation of North Bergen, designers and producers of multi-coloring packaging. Dave came to his present employer as a specialist in the graphic arts, primarily in lithographic productions and sales. Recently he has acted as a graphic arts consultant and technical writer, who regularly contributes articles to the trade press. Dave is considered to be an authority in art and copy production, and has lectured extensively before various groups on these subjects since 1955 when he was Assistant Professor of Printing Management at Carnegie Institute of Technology for two years. Last but not least, he deserves reverberating applause for his activity in the Centurion, a program for underprivileged youth in Greater New York.
Julie Koenig has left the large New York City advertising agency of Doyle, Dane Bernbach Inc. to form his own agency of Papert, Koenig, Lois, Inc. of New York City. Already it is the fastest-growing new agency of the year and is planning to open an office in San Francisco to service the accounts of the Renault-Peugeot distributors for Northern and Southern California, Utah, and Nevada. Before forming his own agency in January, Julie was the ad writer for Volkswagen, Renault's toughest competitor.
Best wishes to all for a very joyous holiday season and Happy New Year. As 1961 is the year of our Twentieth Reunion, won't everyone make at least two New Year's resolutions - first, to make every effort to return toHanover in June; and, secondly, to start nowurging all roommates, fraternity brothers, and class friends, to make plans for joiningyou in Hanover in June.
