From Art Allen we have confirmation that plans are set to repeat our fall rally, which proved so successful last year, at Bonnie Oakes on the Holy Cross game weekend. Bonnie Oakes is located on the shore of Lake Morey, just off Route 5, about 18 miles north of Norwich. The weekend will start with dinner on Friday night, October 14, and end with breakfast on Sunday. Space is available both in the main inn building and in the bungalows, and you should indicate your preference when you write for reservations. Write to Mr. Borden Avery, Bonnie Oakes, Fairlee, Vt., and enclose a deposit of $25 per couple. The rate for the entire weekend, including meals, will be $26 per person.

Pete Knight, quondam president of the Ledyard Canoe Club, must have smiled with satisfaction when newspapers recently carried the story of his son Pete and Jon Fairbank, both from Cleveland, winning a 218-mile canoe race on the Connecticut River, finishing in 33 hours and 50 minutes. The race, which resulted from a challenge by Amherst, was made dangerous by spring freshets swelling the river above the flood level. Twenty canoes were entered and several overturned, but there were no serious injuries.

Charlie Odegaard, president of the University of Washington, has been elected president of the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies. The Council, composed of eminent scholars from Europe, Asia and the Western Hemisphere, serves as an intermediary between the learned societies of the world and UNESCO. It was organized for the international exchange of knowledge of the humanities and to stimulate better understanding of the similarities and differences of basic human values throughout the world. Charlie formerly held the position of executive secretary of the American Council of Learned Societies, and in 1950 was one of the seven persons named to the United States national commission for UNESCO, which is the advisory commission of the United Nations on educational, scientific and cultural affairs.

In Haddonfield, N. J., Bob Fendrich, vice president of the Howard Savings Institution, recently addressed a director management conference session of the N. J. Bankers Association. His subject was "Electronic Data Processing - Curse or Blessing for Your Bank?" For several years now Bob has been doing research and pioneer' work in this field and has become a recognized authority. He holds 15 committee memberships in the American Bankers Association, New Jersey Bankers Association, National Association of Mutual Savings Banks, National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers, and the Savings Banks Research Group.

Speaking of bankers, a short while ago the Springfield (Mass.) Union carried a picture of our esteemed treasurer, Bill Lieson, in the company of the Mayor and two other distinguished citizens. Each was leaning on a shovel, in a pose faintly reminiscent of the days of the WPA. It turns out that they were supposed to be breaking ground for the Linden Plaza Shopping Center in Indian Orchard, and these were golden spades on which they were resting their weight. Bill, as you know, is executive vice president of the Valley Bank and Trust Co. in Springfield, and has been quite prominent. for a number of years in the civic affairs of that city.

Governor Rockefeller's local government legislative program is receiving able support these days from Milt Alpert, counsel to the Office of Local Government and to the State Defense Council. Associated with former Lieutenant Governor Frank Moore, Milt is pioneering in the work of helping local communities within the state solve their own problems, at the local level whenever possible. The operation is receiving national attention, and reports of its work are in demand in cities and counties across the nation.

Assuming the MAGAZINE will follow the same policy as last year and publish only reunion class notes in the July issue, this is our last chance to communicate until October. Have a good summer, and don't forget to make your reservation for the fall get-together.
