Seems this past year has gone rather quickly, for here it is June and time for the summer layoff again. So please bear with me if some of your material comes out in rather condensed form. We have a lot on hand this month and no further columns until next fall.
It seems only fitting and proper to lead off with the news that Buck and Mary Liz Scott have had a boy. That may not seem too unusual, until you consider that first male heir young William was preceded by five sisters - Mary, Sarah, Catherine, Caroline, and Barbara. Buck's still Manager of Quality Control for the ITE Circuit Breaker Company in Greensburg, Penna. Anyone else in the class have six children?
Following births, we might as well mention weddings and things. Brace and Gillian Foster have been honeymooning in Austria and Italy after their March wedding in London. And Dr. Bob Wilbee will marry Shirley Rees of Buffalo in August, after arrival for a residency in Buffalo following his current year at the California Medical Center in San Francisco.
Berl Bernhard, former staff general attorney for the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights, has been appointed deputy staff director. He has served as acting deputy staff director since October 1959, during which time he supervised investigations and arrangements for the recent commission hearings in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Since his graduation from Yale Law School in 1954, Berl has become a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia, the Bar of the U. S. Supreme Court, and the American Bar Association. He is on leave of absence from the law firm of Turney and Turney, Washington, D. C.
In Milton, Mass., Junior High School teacher Tom Clark has created something of an educational sensation by turning his eighth grade math class into a stock exchange, splitting the students up into company directors, brokers, bankers, etc., and conducting a running session of lively trading with himself as the auctioneer. It's a barrel of fun for all, and teaches the kids plenty of math and a lot about the world of business besides.
Dr. Terry Fogarty will be, studying eye surgery at Bellevue Hospital in New York for the next two years, but his memories still hark back to two lovely years with the Army in the "Cognac region" of Southern France. ... Bill Hosier is still assistant to the president of Spirella Company (they make girdles) of Niagara Falls. Hosier understands that Dave Stuart has moved from Grand Rapids to Montreal... Don O'Dowd will be leaving his spot as dean of freshmen, assistant professor and director of a research project to move to a new job "with similar specifications" in Michigan this summer .. . Chevrolet has moved district manager Bob Matthews and family (three youngsters) from Houghton, Me., to St. Johnsbury, Vt. ...Al Katz, Jean and the three little ones are still getting acquainted with Kansas City, where Al's just been moved to become branch manager for Goodall Rubber .. . Bill Halpin is Eastern Field Editor for the College Department of the Oxford University Press, has fun making rounds of the colleges in New York City and New England. ... Doug Gray is in his sixth year with Procter and Gamble's advertising operation, is happy with family in a century-old house ("I've quit fighting the crabgrass!").
Our journalists proper. Woody Klein got a Page One (Newspaper Guild) award for his New York World-Telegram series "I Lived in a Slum," is still chasing the slum landlords, and has also been on stories in Israel, Paris, London and Puerto Rico recently. Business Week has moved Dick Halloran from Philadelphia to New York and made him assistant foreign editor - "I'm happier in this job than any one I've had before."
"Where do you start when you haven't written since graduation?" says Harry Boyce, who goes on to say that he married Shirley Dickson of New York City in 1952, is now the proud father of Bill, seven, Cindy, five, and Brian, one; spent two years in the Air Force security service, three years in advertising and public relations for GE and is now an account executive with the Wilson, Haight, Welch and Grover agency office in Hartford.
Tom and Judy Hatchett expected a new arrival in May to join son Roger and two black rabbits. They are enjoying life thoroughly (skiing in the Sierras, buying cheap booze in Ensenada, Mexico) living in Pacific Palisades while Tom labors in engineering administration for North American Aviation in Los Angeles. .. . Dick and SusieEllis of Wethersfield, Conn., expect their fourth in September. .. . Dave Emerson is a research chemist for Shell Oil, lives with his family in Laporte, Texas. ...The GeorgeMarshalls and daughter Nancy have moved from Toledo to Fort Wayne, Ind., where George is IBM representative for the International Harvester Company.... Bob andJudy Larigan and three sons are still in Manhasset, and Bob's with the group insurance department of Marsh and McLennan in New York.... The Chuck Fryers (two sons) are building a new house in Wilton, Conn., and acquiring an old English sheep dog to go with it. Chuck's an account executive for Young and Rubicam.... Ned Hoeppner has been assigned to the Illinois Bell Telephone Company's management training program, lives with family in Glen Ellyn outside Chicago. ... "No news except that the gold fish died," says John Hatch, still in insurance in Boston and making a home for Sherry and their two sons in Needham.
After moves to Durham, N. C., and the Boston area, Elgin Watch Company is bringing Rusty and Pat Gardner and three children "home" to Chicago where he will be assistant to the head of premium and presentation division.
Howie Fuller is a United Church of Christ clergyman serving two small churches in downtown Buffalo, up to his ears in fighting segregated housing, slum conditions and vice. As well as caring for their three children wife Annette puts in three days a week working with parents of mentally retarded children.
Mike Heyman, teaching at the University of California law school following his year as law clerk for Chief Justice Earl Warren, likes it and reports "looks like we'll stay West." ... Municipal Judge Bob Fullerton of Denver says he's getting plenty of morals cases, but "I haven't had any Dartmouth grads before me yet." ... Bob and Mary Gatzert and Robert Jr. live in Highland Park, Ill., and Bob's a partner in a Chicago insurance brokerage. ...The Navy's Lt. Dick Ellis, Barbara and two daughters will join the '51 Alaskan contingent in July when Dick becomes assistant District Supply Officer in Kodiak. .. . Len Smith observes that running his own insurance business in San Jose, Calif., gives him the "opportunity" of working 25 hours a day. ... Dick Eitel has bought the Fishermen's Boat Shop in Everett, Wash. ... Frank Russell has been named vice president and director of Sleeper and Hartley Inc. in Worcester, Mass.. .. French instructor Bob Coon will switch from Yankee lasses to Southern belles next fall, leaving Vassar to become assistant professor at Sweet Briar... . Bob Bowler is flying his sales territory a lot these days in order to have more nights at home in Lake Bluff, Ill.
Minneapolis contingent reports: Al Blom-quist now senior planner for St. Paul Planning Board Bill McFadden married in March in Chicago (no details). ... Dick McFarland still peddling stocks and Dave Leslie still on the road peddling paper. ... DaveWiggins' fledgling corporation is going great guns.
