Even in Charlotte the cold winds are blowing now, and the Yuletide is upon us —if Hanover's having the right sort of winter, the snow should be piling up and the ski tows clicking. Life in the South is pleasant, but some things are definitely missing.
But down in Florida there's at least one fellow who, if he ever missed the snow at all, won't give it much of a thought this month. For we hear from Ft. Lauderdale that Chuck Packard and Joan Rockey will have a December wedding. A graduate of DePauw, Joan met Chuck in Florida where he's teaching at Ft. Lauderdale High School. They'll be married at her home in Ft. Wayne, Ind.
And speaking of weddings, it's a coincidence we wrote last month that "Bill Hosier (still single) is with the Michigan Bank in Detroit." That "still single" is not for long, for comes the word that Bill's engagement to Jill Schneider was announced in September. Jill's a graduate of Bennett Junior College and a member of the Detroit Junior League.
Dick Patton must be one of the newest fathers in the class, for he writes that number one daughter, Kathryn Anne, arrived at the Patton diggings in Dallas Sept. 24. Dick's in sales with Alcoa in the Dallas area, and reports that some Eastman Kodak fellow named Karcher blows in off the plains from time to time.
From the '51 medical society comes news that Dr. Joe Lindner, now with Uncle Sam's Navy, spent the summer treating 1,000 cases of Asian Flu among Turkish soldiers being sent home from Korea. Joe finished his internship at home (Cincinnati General Hospital) before mounting the high seas.
Further notes on the class mention that Carl Glassberg finished up Fordham Law School last June, passed the New York state bar examinations in September, and is now associated with Peat, Marwick and Mitchell, New York City certified public accountants.
George Bissell has gone back into the academic world. After getting free of the Army and finishing Harvard Business School, George is teaching applied security analysis at Northeastern University and living in Waban, Mass.
News of another wedding comes from Utica, N. Y., where Bob Capps and Lois Wittig were married in September. After Dartmouth, Bob attended Syracuse, put in a hitch in the Air Force, and is now with the Federal Electric Co. in New Jersey. Lois attended Elmira College and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Bill Pardee writes that he's working on "Luther Burbank-type stuff" while seeking his doctor's in plant-breeding at Cornell, and also serving as a research assistant. If you have cows, contact Bill, for he's presently trying to develop better hay and pasture crops.
From Ogdensburg, N. Y., Pete Stien reports that he's left Cities Service Oil Co. in Boston to take over as service station development manager for the George Hall Corp. Pete and Joan mention the arrival of daughter number two, Joan, last June. And Pete says he sees Joe Boissy, also the father of two girls, who's living in Lowville, N. Y.
Don O'Dowd writes that he's curious to know how many college instructors our class has produced, believing the number is abnormally low. If you're teaching in college, let me know, and I'll tally up the count.
For himself, Don says he's now assistant professor of psychology at Wesleyan in Middletown, Conn., after receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard.
Jack Skewes pens a note to say that he's one of the many who were pacing the corridors on maternity floors at reunion time last June, "but we'll improve our planning come time for 10th reunion." John Jr. was the second youngster for Jack and Connie, who live in West Hartford, Conn. Jack's with Stanley Tools in New Britain.
According to Jerry Staton, the fishing, hunting and ski jumping are mighty good up in Glenwood, Minn. (135 miles northwest of Minneapolis), where Jerry is pastor of Union Congregational Church. Jerry also mentions that Sam Chu and his bride Lucy are living in New Haven where Sam's on the Yale faculty.
Another '51 barrister is Ken Smith, who reports that he's been admitted to the New York bar and is practicing with the firm of Hodges, Reavis, McGrath and Downey in New York City. Ken and Dolly are living on Staten Island, and mention that they're expecting the patter of little feet about now.
Understand that Russ Dilks was in Hanover for the annual gathering of Dartmouth Club officers in September. Russ is a pillar of the Philadelphia Club, and practices a little law on the'side.
Also from Hanover, Blair Watson of Dartmouth Films writes that he has two reels of color movies of the class reunion which you may borrow anytime. These will give those of you who missed it a chance to see what a good time we had, and many who were there will also want to see themselves on film. Simply write to Blair, tell him when you want to show the films, and send him enough postage to cover mailing the two small reels to you.
Well, another month is gone. The very best Christmas greetings to all of you and your families. See you in 1958.
