Glass Officers Weekend
June 1960

THE setting of a new attendance record at the annual May meetings of Dartmouth class officers is becoming as regular as the bells in Baker Library. This year another all-time high was recorded as 200 officers from the classes o£ 1894 to 1963 were in Hanover for the weekend of May 14-15. Class chairmen, secretaries, class agents, newsletter editors, memorial fund chairmen, bequest chairmen and reunion chairmen, accompanied by 129 wives, were guests of the College for the two-day weekend.

The weekend opened with a reception held in the dining room of the Hanover Inn on Friday evening for all officers and their wives. This was followed by the annual class officers' dinner in Thayer Hall.

The annual awards to the top class officers of the year were made at the dinner and the four men honored were: Henry R. Bankart '35, class chairman; Carleton G. Broer '27, class secretary; John S. Fenno '48, class treasurer; and William H. Scherman '34, class newsletter editor. Their citations will be found with their respective class columns in this issue.

Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, presided at a joint meeting of all class officers Saturday morning in the 1902 Room of Baker Library. A roll call of the classes was taken by J. Michael McGean '49, Assistant Secretary of the College.

John W. Masland, Provost of the College, spoke on recent educational developments in the College, including the "three-three" curriculum and faculty appointments. He described the past three years as a period of innovation and the present year as one of consolidation.

Following the general session, the various class officer associations held their separate annual meetings. Presiding over these sessions were: Allen I. Bildner '47, president of the Class Chairmen and Presidents Association; Frederick M. Daley '19, president of the Class Agents Association; Victor C. Smith '17, president of the Class Treasurers Association; Ellwood H. Fisher '21, chairman of the Alumni Council's Bequest Committee; and William H. Scherman '34, president of the Newsletter Editors Association. Alfred F. Bremble '56 conducted a meeting for class reunion chairmen; and the memorial fund chairman held a luncheon meeting at the Inn.

Following a free afternoon, during which some enjoyed watching the Dartmouth-Brown baseball game, the annual banquet for class officers and their wives was held in College Hall. Samuel E. Cutler '45, president of the Class Secretaries Association, was toastmaster.

Speakers were Allan W. Cameron '60, who reported some of the views of the undergraduates, and President Dickey, who devoted his remarks to United States foreign policy in relation to the Soviet Union. Another highlight of the annual banquet was an appearance by the College's G.E. College Bowl quiz team. The students were challenged by an alumni team composed of William H. Scherman '34, Russell Brace '56, Herbert S. Talbot '25, James M. O'Neill '07 and Robert Reinhardt '32. Prof. Almon Ives acted as quizmaster.
