Last May 18 the "Journal - Transcript," Franklin - Tilton - Northfield, N. H„ carried the following note: "On March 3, 1913 Fred H. Harris, Joseph Y. Cheney, and CarlE. Shumway of Dartmouth College, made the first ascent of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire on skis from Glen House to the Summit and coasted down again."
Joe Cheney and Hazel were at Ocean Point, Me., for the summer at their attractive cottage, and do not return to St. Petersburg, Fla., until after the October week end in Hanover.
Line Wilson and Lucy were at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Hawaii for a few weeks this summer. They regret their inability to be in Hanover this fall.
Sherm Saltmarsh caught salmon in Maine and returned to provide his usual "fish day" lunch at Pattens on May 17. Several out of town trips and unexpected business appointments kept the number to a record low for attendance: - Eben Clough, George Martin Pennell Aborn, Dale Barker, WardeWilkins and of course, Sherm.
It is with sadness we report the death of Ottila Bonheyo Barends, wife of Howard A."Dutch" Barends, on June 21, 1961 in the Civic Hospital in Ottawa, after a short illness. Ottila was of the Dartmouth contin- gent, despite her non-appearance at reunions, but she made frequent trips to Hanover with Dutch, especially since 1940 when he had been down for eye examinations or "new glasses required." June 21 was the forty-sixth anniversary of their wedding in Albany, N. Y. She was very active in Buckingham, P.Q. in St. Andrews United Church affairs and the Girl Scouts (she was Captain of the first Troop when it was organized in 1927). The sympathy of all of us goes to Dutch.
Vic Dunbar and Don toured England, Ireland and Scotland this summer and spent two days at their ancestral home in Dunbar. Only ruins are now left of the castle.
