A major publishing event of the fall was the appearance of Webster's Third New International Dictionary, with Philip Babcock Gove '22 as editor-in-chief. Ten years in the making, this unabridged version of the Webster-Merriam dictionary, familiar to every educated user of the English language, contains 450,000 entries and runs to 2,720 pages.
The third edition is not a revision of the second but is a completely new dictionary, using a new single-phrase defining technique, supplemented by usage examples, and including some 100,000 new words or meanings that have come into the language in modern times. In preparing it for publication, Mr. Gove directed the work of a staff of more than 100 editorial specialists.
