Lesley Barnes of Rowayton, Conn., and Jock McDonald of Darien, Conn., both members of the class of 1987, will work parttime this year on writing and editing assignments for the Alumni Magazine as Whitney Campbell interns.
Barnes, the daughter of F. Duncan Barnes '57, has had extensive reporting experience, both with The Dartmouth and with the biweekly student paper at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., from which she graduated in 1983. She has also worked as a proofreader and fact-checker for SouthNorth News Service, a foundation based in Hanover that distributes stories about Third World countries to publications across the United States. A year ago, she spent three months as an intern with two book publishing companies in New York, working in the acquisitions department of Holt Rinehart and Winston and in the production department at Praeger Publishers, both subsidiaries of CBS Educational and Professional Publishing. Last summer she worked for Sales and Marketing Management, through an internship program organized by the American Society of Magazine Editors. She is proficient in Spanish and has also worked as a Spanish tutor.
McDonald, the son of John M. McDonald Jr. '5l, has been a reporter for The Dartmouth, was news editor and copy editor on the school paper at Darien (Conn.) High School, and was editor-in-chief of the monthly paper at the South Kent (Conn.) School, from which he graduated in 1983. In addition, at South Kent, he won the Barrett English Prize, and he was a member of the varsity crew. At Dartmouth, he was on the lightweight crew team his freshman year. He also serves as student liaison officer for the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Fairfield County, is a member of Kappa Sigma Gamma fraternity, and spent the fall of 1984 with Dartmouth's Language Study Abroad program in Lyon, France. He enjoys sailing and took part last fall in Mystic Seaport's program in American Maritime Studies in Connecticut. He joined his interests in sailing and writing during high school as a part-time administrative assistant at Yacht Racing and Cruising magazine, based in Darien. Last summer he worked at Dartmouth's Career and Employment Services.
