PROTECTION of its faculty and staff members against "catastrophic" medical costs has been put into effect by the College this year by means of Major Medical Expense Insurance. The College is bearing the full cost of this added coverage which has been adopted in cooperation with the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, the organization through which the College's faculty and staff retirement program is administered.
In essence, the new insurance takes care of most of an unusually heavy medical expense not reimbursed by Blue Cross or Blue Shield insurance, which is also available to College staff members on a group basis. In order to screen out small claims, a cash deductible amount varying from $200 to $600 applies before benefits are paid. In a hypothetical case involving total expenses of $2,745, Blue Cross-Blue Shield would pay $975, the staff member $514, and the new TIAA insurance $1,256.
The plan calls for a maximum coverage of $15,000 for each insured individual. It also protects the staff member's dependents, including wife, unmarried children under 19, and unmarried dependent children 19 through 22 if they are full-time students.
