It no longer needs to be a surprise. Openly we can report that a project is now under way to pay tribute to Tom Dent, who retired last June as head coach of lacrosse and soccer, after 36 years of service to the College.
A committee composed of men who played soccer or lacrosse under Dent has agreed that the most appropriate tribute to the beloved Scotsman would be a gift to the College in his name. James M. West '35, chairman of the committee, has announced that the gift will be a cabin located in Dartmouth's Gile Forest to be known as the "Tom Dent Cabin."
Dent's devotion to outdoor life is widely known, and also his keen interest in the facilities available to Dartmouth men. For many years he was chairman of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Commission.
To build such a cabin, the committee has been informed, the sum of $5,000 will be required. This figure will provide a cabin with the necessary furnishings and a sum that might be needed for site clearance and the building of an access road.
Up to the present time the committee has solicited the participation only of men who played soccer or lacrosse under Dent. To date, 121 gifts from this group have amounted to $2700, placing the project over the halfway mark.
The committee has decided no longer to keep the project a secret among Tom Dent's former players, but to invite contributions from all alumni friends of Dent who would like to take part in this tribute. Clearance for this undertaking has been given by Dartmouth's Trustee Committee on Development, but the project committee hastens to point out that this is not an official College appeal for money.
Checks should be made payable to Dartmouth College and mailed to James M. West, 135 Simonds Rd., Lexington, Mass. The committee includes also Nelson A. Rockefeller '30, Maurice B. Makepeace '28, Frank J. Wright '35, George E. Goodman '35, William E. McMullen '35, John A. Gidney '41, Robert L. Merriam '48, and Walter D. Pugh '56.
