The 1960-61 season came to a close in the same manner in which it started. In the finale against Brown, the Bruins rallied in the closing minutes to defeat the Green. The winning basket was scored with only two seconds showing on the clock. George Ramming scored 33 points for the Big Green, which brought his total for fourteen Ivy games to 288 and gave him the league scoring crown.

The high point of the season came against Princeton at Alumni Gym as the Indians humbled the league champions, 73-69. A one-two scoring punch was administered by the sophomore backcourt duo of Bobby West and Steve Spahn. Both men zeroed in on the basket, West for 24 and Spahn for 23.

Squash

Coach Red Hoehn's racketmen finished their season at home, beating Penn and losing Princeton on the same weekend. In the match with Penn, wins were registered by Phil Meyer, Lowell Bauer, Dave Smoyer, Fred Reed, Lew Bruggeman of the Green.

Eddie Jeremiah's senior-laden first line exploded against Princeton in the final game of the season, 8-3, as Jake Haertl scored three goals and had two assists and Bobby Moore had one goal and three assists. The win gave the Big Green a third-place tie in the final league standings and marked the second time this year that the Indians had scalped the Tigers.

Kevin Lowther guarded the nets for the Big Green in the Princeton game and was credited with 21 saves.

Freshman Hockey

The '64 sextet won four out of its last five games to finish with a better-than-average record. In the Deerfield game, goals were scored by Captain John Carpenter, Fred Corrigan and Ed Merritt, with Merritt, Barry Lawson and John Fiske each receiving an assist.

Wrestling

M.I.T. 24, Dartmouth 5 Wesleyan 18, Dartmouth 11 Season's record: Won 2, Lost 6

The Big Green wrestlers were beaten twice in their last two matches, bringing to a close a tough season. Three individual victories were recorded by Indian wrestlers against Wesleyan. They included wins by Andy Alland, Ellie Torbert and Peter Brink, all wrestlers in lightweight divisions.

Swimming

The Big Green swimmers met strong competition from both Yale and Navy, co-champions of the Eastern Swimming League, and in each meet went down to defeat by a substantial margin. Terry Bentley, Jay Pierson and Tim Grumbacher were the only Indians to take first places against the Middies.

Charlie Brown, who missed both the Navy and Columbia meets because of a shoulder injury, came back in the Eastern Intercollegiates to earn a third place in the 100-yard freestyle.

Freshman Swimming

Dartmouth 52, Deerfield 34 Dartmouth 71, Exeter 15 Season's record: Won 8, Lost 0

The freshmen swimming team completed an undefeated season with decisive wins over Deerfield and Exeter. John Boynton, Bill Lewis, Hank Marshall, and Sandy Shapiro, to name just a few, were standouts all season and should add potential to next year's varsity.

Track

Dartmouth 71, Brown 39 Heptagonals: Dartmouth 5th Season's record: Won 5, Lost 1

The Big Green track team has completed its finest indoor season in recent years. In dual meets the Indians were beaten only once, and then by Cornell by a five-point margin. In their last meet, they overpowered Brown, 71-39.

In the Heptagonals, Tom Laris successfully defended his two-mile championship, with a winning time of 9:23. Over-all the Indians picked up nineteen points in the Heptagonal games, which were won by Yale.

In the 60-yard dash at the Heps, Gerry Ashworth and Bill Zeilman finished third and fourth, while sophomore Tom Holzel was fourth in the high jump. Nick Jennison also earned a fourth in the mile run, and John Knight captured fifth in the 60-yard high hurdles.
