I hope you all had a pleasant summer. Here in the East it’s been on the cool side and for the most part the kind of weather you’d like. We are a little shy on space for the volume of notes that we have this time so I’ll get right into the news.

I know everyone in the Class is saddened by the news of Rita Holbrook’s passing. These recent years have been a terrible ordeal for her and, of course, for Pat. At least she is now released from her suffering. On behalf of all Twenties I send sincere sympathy to Pat and their son David.

On his way West from Switzerland who popped in but good old Ralph Roberts. It’s been many a day since we had a chance to visit and I was delighted to see him. He looks well and handsome as ever and re- ports the family in fine fettle.

At the Alumni Council Meeting last lune Bill (Wm. A.) Carter was elected for a 2-year term as Faculty Representative suc- ceeding Ed Booth TB. Doc (Erwin C.)Miller was elected for a 2-year term repre- senting Region 1, New England, District 3 and also was appointed to the Committee on Bequest and Estate Planning. Leo M.Ungar was re-elected to the Alumni Council representing Region IV, Middlewestern States, District 3 and in addition was ap- pointed to the Committee on Enrollment and Admission. One of the highlights of the Alumni Council meeting was the granting of an Alumni Award to Sherry (H. Sheri-dan) Baketel Jr. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!

Among those in Hanover during the Council meeting were the Snedecors, DocMiller and his children, Pat Holbrook, A 1Foley, the Baketels, the Ungars and BudWeymouth.

William R. Anderson is now retired and has moved to 4401 Sunrise Drive, South, St. Petersburg 5, Fla. Lloyd Van V. Young is another classmate recently retired. He is living at 238 West Norwalk Road, Darien, Conn.

Santa Barbara, Calif., seems to be getting its share of retired Twenties. I. Harry Worth apparently is now retired and living at 684 Oak Grove Drive, Santa Barbara. CharlieGoodnow, another retiree, lives at 3112 Calle Rosales, Santa Barbara. Charlie says he and Tele are completely sold on Cali- fornia. They were fortunate to find a lovely house and are extremely happy with the weather, the mountains, the ocean and the nice people they have met. They are just 100 miles from Los Angeles where their daughter Mary lives and 1,000 miles from son Bud in Idaho. Their youngest son War- rie, who made a great record for himself at MIT, is with lones & Laughlin in Pitts- burgh.

According to latest information Hank(Henry H.) Hayes has moved from Lansing, Mich., to 91 Astor Drive, Rochester 10, N. Y. Jake (Adolphus W.) Gorton apparently got tired of life in Florida and can now be located at 93 Carrington Avenue, Providence 6, R. I.

Sherm Adams was one of the guest speak- ers during the Fourth Annual M. Ernest Townsend Memorial Lecture Series spon- sored by the Student Council and College Center Board at Newark State College in Union, N. L His topic was “Democracy in Defense.”

Back in June A 1 (Albert Wesley) Frey was named Director of the Management Pro- gram for Executives of the Graduate School of Busness at the University of Pittsburgh. As I’ve said many times quite a guy, this Frey! » r A I /All TV zT \ + ~

A note from A 1 (Allan M.) Cate to the effect that he is now running his business from his home in Needham, Mass. He says that his decision to do this certainly cuts down on the parking problem and takes off most of what pressure there was. A 1 says he spends much of his time on the tennis courts, indoors for six months and outdoors for the balance of the year. As a matter of fact he says he has been playing regularly five days a week. Can anybody top that? A 1 is still flying his 16-year-old Cessna which he has just had painted.

The August 3 edition of the Boston Her- ald carried a picture of Paul Osborn, A 1(Albert D.) Osborn’s eldest son, in the proc- ess of checking the handwriting of signa- tures on the nomination papers of inde- pendent U. S. Senate aspirant H. Stuart Hughes at the elections division office.

Last June I had the good luck to run into Sam Stratton at the University Club of New York and we had a wonderful visit. Inci- dentally, according to the New York Times and the Boston Sunday Herald, Sam will re- tire as President of Middlebury in Septem- ber 1963 and will become President Emer- itus. Congratulations, Sam, on the terrific job you’ve done through the years.

Among the June 1962 graduates were three sons of Twenties Dusty Miller, son of Doc (Erwin C.) and Harriet Miller, Dave Pullen, son of Howard and Helen Pullen, and Jim Morse, son of Isabel and the lateBob Morse. On behalf of all Twenties, best wishes to all of you as you start out to make your mark on the world.

We recently received an announcement of the marriage of Frank and Kay Mayer’s daughter Barbara Ann to Mr. Fillmore Charles Marks Jr. on July 24 in Glencoe, 111. The only other detail furnished is that the newlyweds will be at home after August 15 at 1810 Green Street, San Francisco, Calif. On behalf of the Class, best wishes to the bride and groom.

The following is an extract from a letter which Dean Travis recently wrote to PaulRichter:

On April 5 Ort Hicks addressed a dinner meet- ing of Dartmouth Alumni Association of Montana at Great Falls, Mont. Gladys and I made a 200- mile drive (each way) to see him again. Thought he did an excellent public relations job. Looked for Stan Antrim but he was not able to make it. Sat next to his brother Joel ’25 and his wife. We’re looking forward to seeing the Abe Wins- lows as soon as they can get away for that long trip.

I’m working like a dog trying to finish our landscaping. Built 175 ft. of colonial fence and planted a couple of blue spruce trees. Expect a lot of perennials to arrive any day from Wayside Gardens in Ohio. Recently bought a Brittany spaniel pup and am training him to hunt next season. He is 9 months old and goes to dog obedi- ence classes with me as M.S.C. He gives me plenty of exercise!

Please give my best to that police sergeant who pulled me off the milk train in the fall of 1916.

Sounds as though there is never a dull moment for Dean.

A postcard from Charlie Crathera reports that Spain was wonderful and more people should see and know it. He and Elsa spent three weeks in Italy, two weeks in Austria and at the time he wrote they were at Berchtesgaden, Germany one of Hitler’s hideaways now operated as a rest and vaca- tion area by the U. S. Military. Following that they planned to go to Switzerland and then north through Germany to the Scandi- navian group, and then over to Scotland and England. Certainly sounds wonderful!
