Detroit's Dartmouth Club has had two successful adventures already this season. The first was a luncheon September 10 for the thirteen Detroit area members of the freshman class of '66. Detroit alumni attended this luncheon at Carl's Chop House to honor the newest Dartmouth Class and give them advice about the Hanover Plain.
The Detroit Club's second event was held October 5, Dartmouth Night, at the Goebel Brewery in Detroit. We were indeed fortunate to have Tom Montgomery '46 and Ernie Kern '37 as officers of the local brewery which provided their Circus Room as a meeting place. Needless to say, gallons of samples were consumed along with an excellent buffet arranged by Dave Moss '58.
Dartmouth Night in Detroit this year was one of the largest in recent years with almost 100 alumni attending. Attendance was swelled by a busload of extremely eager alumni drinkers from Ann Arbor who arrived (and fortunately left) on a bus from the newest Dartmouth Alumni Club at the University of Michigan. This promising group has been spurred into action by an experienced Dartmouth organizer. PuffyStoddart '58.
Seward Weber '49, Assistant Director of Admissions at the College, attended the evening affair after a day of enrollment activities at prep schools in the Detroit area. SamCoombs '44 and Larry Gazely '60 also got together with Seward while planning a trip to the Cornell game on a bus for Dartmouth alums in Detroit.
Dick Brown '29 and Dave Mott '45 had attended the Massachusetts football game the week previous and gave their account of this year's top team. This was followed by movies of last year's games and a Sachem oration by Dutton Foster '61.
Detroit alumni exchanged experiences until early in the morning but one of the first to leave was Dick Lyman '57 who had to run home to check on the newest member of the class of 1980 born to his wife that afternoon.
Among some of the other Detroit area alumni attending were Phil Moon '42, Garvin Bawden '47, Bill Howenstein '56, JimDavidow '58, Graham Ong '34, Doug Whitney '60 and Skip Weymouth '54.
