Possibly before this reaches you, you will have received the first in the current series of The Pace Setter, which Johnny Emerson has very generously offered to edit. We all remember the more than commendable job which Lynn Callaway did with The PaceSetter, particularly during the war years when the class was well scattered, and the continuation of its publication, it seems to me, is a fitting tribute to Lynn and his untiring efforts on behalf of the Class and the College. As to matter of policy, John says:
"I should like to initiate some discussion of what the class is trying to do—how the class can better help the college, its members, and how the college can better serve the class .... I think ThePace Setter should be more or less of an open forum for the class, as Callaway tried to make it. I hope we can arouse some interest along those lines and not just degenerate into a house organ."
We hope to have in your hands soon, through the channel of The Pace Setter, thereport of the Charlie Hitchcock's committeeon class organization.
Dick Niebling, a master at Exeter, reports:
"That son I expected a year ago turned out to be a third daughter. But otherwise no major shocks have perturbed or disturbed the even tenor of my ways."
It's reassuring to learn that somewhere inthis world some ways are pursuing an eventenor.
Danny Marshall, Boston department storetycoon, has come through with some reportingof Pulitzer prize caliber:
"From Fran Belcher I understand that JohnBarrows is studying for his Ph.D. in Education at Boston U. Jim Golden is a budding retailer in his hometown of Marlboro. Bill Main is one of the strong pillars of the local Gulf headquarters, along with Herb Christiansen. Atherton Fuller, father of several handsome children, is an up-and- coming lawyer in the venerable firm of Lennon, McLellan and Fish. Harry Stoodley is shortly becoming the number-one paint salesman in Boston and environs. Gordon Blanchard is with a church society doing placement work for wayward boys. A small visit in Albany not long ago revealed that Harry Connors is working for the Albany Casting Company, which firm is run bv ChuckBlumenauer and family. Harry reports that TomRichmond recently took for himself a wife. I ran into Tom last summer during two weeks' military training at Camp Lejeune. Tom is Commanding Officer of the Ist Marine Reserve Battalion of New York City."
John Nelson has penned, as he says, "a long overdue report":
"I am now living in Springfield, Mass. In March, 1946, upon my separation from the Army, my wife and I (she being formerly Jean Kathryn Pinchkey of Oakland, Calif., and Mills College) came back east to Manchester, where I returned to my pre-war job with Chicopee Mfg. Corp. On October 2, 1946, we had a son, John Pinchkey Nelson. Due to his mother's previous ignorance of the existence of the Ivy League, not to mention the Hanover Hills, Carnival, etc., he will probably pick his own college, but God help him if it's anything else. In November, I had a chance to transfer to the original Chicopee plant in Chicopee Falls, so since January, 1947, we have been living at 36 Puritan Circle, in the area known as Sixteen Acres. We will, of course, be pleased to see any '3Bers who may be in this hub of Western Mass."
The former builder of this column has knocked off his boycott and says that WrightMallory, leading contender along with a guy named Reno for the title of most ineligible bachelor of the class of '38, exhibited an improved technique in Syracuse not too many months ago "He even snowed some wives at a party at the University Club." Brother Von Pechmann further vouchsafes that Marty King, now with G. E. in Schenectady, and Dr. Arlington Bensel, practising in South Orange, were also there. Dick Bennett was recently in Utica, being connected with a Boston wool concern.
Don Boyle is now living in Hicksville, Long Island Len McChesney is in Los Angeles, and according to latest reports, so was Lana Turner.. ... Fred Wagner is at Harvard Business School Ben Walkley, Lt. Comdr., USN, is on the CV 45—the Valley Forge, out of San Francisco Lew Moorman is in San Antonio and Bill Stratton hits the jackpot living in Orinda, California, a beautiful spot.
A usually reliable informant says: "I am glad to say that reunion plans are not either too elabotate nor involve too much moving around. The Boston crowd is really on the ball and doing a great job." Don't forget the date—June of Forty-Eight. And don't forget to make with the class dues, which young Walls will gladly receive out on the West Coast.
