Two of the country's foremost theologians visited the campus last month for a particularly exciting round of lectures and discussion sessions. Dr. Abraham Heschel, Professor of Jewish Ethics and Mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, was in Hanover to deliver the fifth annual Jacob Ziskind Lectures, under the auspices of the Tucker Foundation. The other major figure, himself a Ziskind Lecturer in 1958, was the Rt. Rev. James A. Pike, Protestant Episcopal Bishop of California, who gave two Great Issues lectures, met with student groups during his nine-day stay, and participated in a public symposium on church unity.
In this year's Ziskind Lectures, Dr. Heschel discussed the general subject "Judaism and the Human Situation" in a series of three talks. Author of many books on theological and philosophical topics, Dr. Heschel is recognized by both Jewish and Christian scholars as one of the greatest and most creative religious philosophers of this era. His writings have been particularly successful in bringing a fresh understanding of the faith of Israel to this generation. His books include Man Is Not Alone, God in Search ofMan, Maimonides, and Die Prophetie.
Bishop Pike has been a frequent lecturer in Hanover and a favorite with the undergraduates. His lectures opening the winter term of the Great Issues Course dealt with "Science and Religion."
Bishop Pike, a leading spokesman for closer cooperation between various Christian bodies, was dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York from 1952 until 1958. Prior to his ordination he was a practicing lawyer serving with the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He is widely known as the author of six books including Beyond Anxiety, If You Marry Outside Your Faith,Doing the Truth, The Next Day.
