Cart Strickland is a great class agent. He leads a great class. He is giving his all to put that class at the top of the Derby in 1962. We can save him an awful lot of jangled nerves if each of us will give early and generously to the Alumni Fund. At his age, Cart needs a boost.
Bart Stoodley, professor of Sociology at Wellesley College, has been granted a sabbatical leave for next year. He will go to the Philippines and Hong Kong to continue his study of changing family patterns and their consequences in Southeast Asia.
Maury Mandelbaum, chairman of the Philosophy department at Johns Hopkins University, has been elected president of the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division, for 1962.
John S. Dickey Jr. represented Dartmouth in the Carnival ski meet, finishing 8th in a field of 45 in the cross-country race and 26th among 41 in the jump. This placed him 14th among 38 entries in the "Nordic Combined." He did well in tough competition.
Another '29 son, Dr. James E. Cavanagh Jr., completed his surgical residency at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital early in the winter and is starting a private practice in surgery at Portsmouth, N. H.
Conrad C. Born '60 was commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve last year. After serving on a buoy tender, he was assigned to the U. S. C. G. Cutter Courier WAGR 410). This is a floating Voice of America station, operating in the vicinity of Rhodes, Greece. Conrad married Virginia Rose Arbuckle, of Quincy, Mass., on November 5, 1961.
Chan Bete is a member of the State Board of Library Commissioners in Massachusetts. This involves him in the plans for a metropolitan library region, with the Boston Public Library as the regional reference center.
