Greetings from Pier 6 at lovely Naples harbor. The ship hasn't moved in so darn long I strongly suspect that some of the boys snuck over and welded her to the seawall. However, being in port for a long time has its compensations, you get so you can memorize the skyline, you recognize every piece of garbage that floats around (one paint can comes back every morning to say hello), and you establish a firm beachhead with the natives. Naples has the distinction of producing Sophia Loren, Enrico Caruso, Frank Nitti, and Alia Capone. Such is the contrast one finds. The food is pretty interesting too; I found a bottle-cap in my pizza and in one interesting little spot the waiter hid the bill under a pile of spaghetti. We leave for Athens in a day or so (with luck). Actually (why do people always come back with "actually" after they gripe a bit?) actually, it is pretty nice and the sun and Capri and all have their advantages.

The news for this month would just about cover the back of a stamp, but it is pretty important stuff, so - John Benepe who passed through Naples en route somewhere, and who is the owner of that stupid paint can, I am sure, gave me a report on some of the boys. First of all, John was married last year, and number one child is expected on or about June 1. Pat McManus is rooming with a couple of '59's and studying at Stamford Business School. Bob Jennings is a November graduate of Naval O.C.S. and is presently on a destroyer out of Long Beach. Hartly Webster is aboard a transport (Navy) homeported in San Diego and right now is with the 7th Fleet out Nippon way. Messrs. Power and Manske are slaving away in New York, while Parker Albee is adding degrees at Duke Graduate School. Ford Daley is undoubtedly the target of blackboard erasers and questions about the Vi-Kings as he teaches school part-time while attending Tufts Grad. going for his Master's in Education. Another new old salt, Dave Loughran sent me a letter postmarked Norfolk, with a return address of Evanston, Ill., and written in haste before departure for Rota, Spain. Needless to say, Brother Dave sports a new Navy officer's uniform. Dave and his wife Betsy (who sports a new Navy officer's wife's uniform - C Rations, binoculars, and a Berlitz phase book) took a tour of Southern Europe for a moon and returned to Pensacola whither Dave got his commission and his introduction to Naval Air. Several short training schools were attended and now the Loughrans are just about set to go to Rota for a couple of years. Dave reports that JohnHadley is busy being a Marine in San Diego (last I heard he was in Paris, must have been Parris Island). Hank Eberhardt is at Newport O.C.S. Jaime Alfaro is studying business at Columbia. Chipper Charlie Boynton is teaching at a prep school in Oldwich, N. J. Dave Hally is grousing around old ruins in Colombia while on a course of study in Anthropology at Harvard (find any guano, Dave?). Say, speaking of guano, whatever happened to lovable little Guana, Sigma Nu's answer to Rin Tin Tin? Seems that Fritz and Cora Kern have a new baby girl who holds daddy's books out at Michigan Business School. Jake Gillespie and Sue Wagner, his wife-to-be, will be going to Ghana (Ghana - Guana, nah, must be just a coincidence).

Tony Wight wrote and mentioned that he thought his name looked nice in print, I do too, to wit: Tony Wight, Tony Wight, TonyWight, now known as "Pvt. Waste" Tony is being sent to the Army's Language School at Monterey, Calif. This is quite an achievement and speaks well for the language dept. at Dartmouth (except for the minor fact that Tony claims that they're sending him to learn English).

Learned that Chuck Ritchie is receiving a 47-week course of instruction in the Korean(?) language at the Monterey language school. As you all know Chuck majored in Russian Civilization thus doing himself worlds of good and preparing himself immeasurably well for studying ... Korean.

Now for some quickies on the belle tolls. Miss Janet Smith and Steve Merrill were married in Southampton, N. Y., way last December (my apologies for tardiness). The two will be living as one while Steve finishes up for his Master's in Hanover. Skip Bean and Miss Pamela Barrett of Hartford, Vt., were married in Hanover where Mrs. Bean will continue to work as a secretary while Skip fulfills his military obligation. Maybe Brother Bean will learn Korean too (but only if he's real, real lucky). Soon to be - Miss Jane Berenson and Herb Kessler have announced their engagement and plan a June wedding. Herb is presently at Columbia Law.

Willy Cogswell sent me a picture of his wedding which was mentioned earlier. The Cogswells are going to take a slightly delayed honeymoon in Europe this summer and return to Clinton, Conn., where Bill will be teaching math. Bob Hargraves has joined Bill at Brown and is going for his Ph.D. in Physics.

Peerless Paul Nelson, known as "King" to all (I think the title has something to do with the numbers racket, but I'm not sure) has complicated his once free and easy life, where his biggest concern was where the next grapefruit was coming from, with several major factors. He is (1) married to the former Miss Elaine Guerin of Rochester, N. H. This took place on February 17 at Coral Gables. (2) He is trying to squeeze in an MBA at U. of Florida before taking step (3) making like a soldier at Fort Belvoir. What a mover you are. King.

The natty news service provided me with a few more: John Hancock made it through O.C.S. and is stationed on the carrier "Randolph" out of Norfolk. And the scourge of Mass. Hall, Charlie Forsdick turned in his Dartmouth jacket for a tux and married Miss Susan Swann of Livingston, N. J., on February 4. Charlie and the missus are at Columbia. Also the man whose name looks like spilled alphabet soup, Ron Wybranowski is engaged to a very lovely young lady, Miss Joan Twomey, planning to be married in May. Ron is associated with IBM in Hartford, Conn.

Jake Haertl is trying out for the United States Hockey Team in Boston. I'm afraid that clipping is pretty old though. David E.Clark has been given the Lebovitz Memorial Award at Tuck School for making an outstanding contribution to the daily life of the school.

Late News Flash - the Official Class Boy for the Class of 1961 is Karsten Craig, son of Bob Balsley. Appropriate engraved plaques, buildings, streets, dorms, etc., will be completed shortly to commemorate our first official act as a class since graduation. By the way, the next act is support the Fund Drive - let's all give Rog McArt and his agents typically tremendous '6l cooperation.
