MUSIC ADVISORY GROUP TO AID HOPKINS CENTER
May 1962

Headed by Goddard Lieberson, president of Columbia Records, a fourteen-man Music Advisory Committee has been named to work with the Hopkins Center staff on musical matters. Some of the foremost figures in the world of music - composers Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, and William Schuman; conductors Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, and Erich Leinsdorf; organist E. Power Biggs; and progressive jazz musician David Brubeck - are members of the new advisory group, which matches the one named earlier to assist the Hopkins Center staff in the field of the drama.

Dartmouth alumni on the advisory committee are Arthur R. Virgin '00 of New York, patron of the arts; Charles E. Griffith '15 of Norwich, retired music publisher; Richard P. Leach '32, assistant director in charge of operating New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; Paul Weston '33, Hollywood musical director and orchestra leader; and Nathaniel Merrill '48, stage director of the Metropolitan Opera Company.

The committee is expected to provide guidance on the establishing of musical programs, invitations to performers and lecturers, and the commissioning of new works. In addition to its educational work, the Hopkins Center will serve the north country community and music generally.

"I have accepted this appointment," Mr. Lieberson said, "because I find a genuine excitement in the prospect of a college of this distinction embarking upon a program of such breadth and vitality in the arts. The possibilities of its use are indeed exciting, and it will represent an encouraging growth of interest in the fine arts on the part of scholarly oriented institutions."

Facilities for Dartmouth's developing music program are concentrated at the southern end of Hopkins Center. Building progress there is farther along than in any other part of the Center, and the Music Department is expected to be the first to move in next fall, or in late summer.
