'62 Fund Begins Impressively
May 1962

"Spectacular" is the only adjective describing the progress of the 1962 Alumni Fund campaign which opened April 1. By the end of the first three weeks the Fund had reached $327,978, or 26% of its dollar goal of $1,250,000, with 3,868 gifts from alumni, parents and friends recorded.

This sizzling start put the 1962 campaign $88,000 and some 1,100 contributors ahead of the best previous year, 1961, in which the Dartmouth Fund broke through the million-dollar barrier.

Fund Chairman John D. Dodd '22, who returned in early April from a tencity trip during which he and President Dickey met with over 800 class agents, cited several major reasons for the fine early showing: effective work by the largest class agents organization in Fund history, over 3,000 men; the impact of President Dickey's talks to alumni clubs and the opening Fund message which the President wrote; and finally, the increased understanding by Dartmouth alumni of the great importance which the Fund has for the College's ongoing objectives and plans.

Fund officials in Hanover pointed out that nearly all classes were running ahead of any previous year, that the average gift figure was most encouraging, and that class campaigns were more thoughtfully organized and conducted than ever before.

The second Alumni Fund mailing, featuring information on the needs of Baker Library to be met from a portion of the 1962 proceeds, was sent to all non-contributors in late April. This message is reprinted on Page 12 of this month's issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE for the benefit of those alumni who did not receive it because they had already contributed.
