Athletic Reorganization

DARTMOUTH College's physical education and intramural programs together with its intercollegiate athletic activities are being consolidated under a reorganized Dartmouth College Athletic Council, according to the plan announced last month by President Dickey.

The initial step, effective with the spring term, was the transferring of administrative responsibilities for the Department of Physical Education and the intramural program to the DCAC and Director of Athletics Robert A. Rolfe '31. Previously these programs came under the jurisdiction of the Dean of the Faculty.

President Dickey said the reorganization was recommended by a subcommittee of the Trustees Planning Committee to help develop a strong, integrated program and had been approved in principle by the Board of Trustees. The present transfer of responsibilities will provide the experience necessary to work out the final organizational setup. Before the change becomes permanent it will require the approval of the faculty and the Trustees and revisions in the DCAC constitution.

To centralize the primary responsibility for the program during the interim period, President Dickey has designated Irving F. Smith '41, associate director of athletics, to serve as coordinator of physical education and intramural athletic af- fairs under Mr. Rolfe's general direction.

The basic objective is to strengthen the work being done throughout the College in three closely related areas: physical education, intramural athletics, and intercollegiate athletics. The Trustees concluded that all these important activities would be better served in the future by bringing them under a common administrative responsibility.

President Dickey emphasized that this change will not alter the academic status of the members of the Department of Physical Education who now hold faculty appointments but will bring operating responsibility in such matters as the budget, personnel recruitment, and facilities to the DCAC.

He pointed out that the College is "presently engaged in an important rehabilitation and extension of its athletic facilities and it is essential that we make sure now that our plans for the utilization of all these facilities are farsighted and comprehensive."

The major components in the athletic plant expansion are the Nervi-designed field house, a new swimming pool in the east wing of the gym, and an enlarged basketball area in the west wing.
