THE Dartmouth Alumni Award, bestowed by the Alumni Council on Dartmouth men who have honored the College by their distinguished careers and who have demonstrated uncommon devotion to the College by loyal service to its historic purposes, was awarded in Hanover last month to five well-known graduates.

Ellwood H. Fisher '21, president of the Alumni Council, conferred the first of these awards on Richard Remsen '12, New York lawyer, at the Commencement dinner meeting on Saturday, June 9. The other recipients, honored at the Alumni Council's annual dinner in Thayer Hall on Wednesday, June 13, were Edward E. Martin '19 of Boston, New England district manager of Graybar Electric Company; Nichol M. Sandoe '19, New York patent lawyer; H. Sheridan Baketel Jr. '20 of Philadelphia, general manager of the Union Central Life Insurance Company; and Francis H. Horan '22 of New York, vice president and legal counsel of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.

Each recipient received a small replica of the silver Wentworth Bowl and a specially printed citation. The citations read by Mr. Fisher were as follows:

RICHARD REMSEN '12

Graduate of the Class of 1912, you have had a long and distinguished career in the field of law. You received your LL.B. degree from Columbia Law School in 1917, and then you spent two years as a Captain in the U. S. Army during World War I. In 1919 you became associated with the firm of Wayland & Bernard of New York, becoming a partner in 1932. That name was changed in 1940 to Bernard, Remsen, Millham and Bowdish, and today you are a senior partner of the firm.

Married to a Smith graduate in 1918, you are the father of three Dartmouth sons, members of the Classes of 1940, '43, and '50. For a number of years you served 1912 as Class Agent and you are a former mem- ber of the Dartmouth Alumni Council. You are an active supporter and former vice-president of the Dartmouth Club of New York.

The list of civic, social, and professional organizations you have served is long and formidable, and we mention but two of your activities here. Currently you are a trustee of the Choate School and president of the board of trustees of Long Island's Nassau Hospital.

We are proud to honor your career and devotion to college and community service with this Dartmouth Alumni Award.

EDWARD EVERETT MARTIN '19

You, sir, will always be known to your Dartmouth friends, as "Spider" Martin. Whether you got that handle as one of the Big Green's finest third basemen ... or, as you say, for being small enough to be pushed through a transom in midnight dormitory raids ... is of little importance to your friends. Spider it was, and Spider it shall always be.

Since graduation from Tuck School you have been associated with Graybar Electric Company. You are New England district manager, director, and member of the ex- ecutive board of that organization. You are also a director of the Boston Mutual Life Insurance Company.

In Dartmouth affairs, you have been an ever loyal worker for many years. Among your numerous duties you have been a Class Agent, member of the Alumni Council, and an officer of several Dartmouth clubs. In political circles, you have participated actively behind the scenes assisting your brother, Speaker loe Martin, in many exciting national affairs.

For your record as an outstanding Dartmouth son, we are proud to present you Spider Martin - the Dartmouth Alumni Award.

NICHOL MAIN SANDOE '19

As a talented attorney, you have pursued a career in the law since leaving Dartmouth with the Class of 1919. You earned your LL.B. degree in 1923 at George Washington University. Today you are a member of the New York law firm of Emery, Whittemore, Sandoe and Graham, specializing in the complicated area of patents and trademarks.

College affairs have played a leading part in the Sandoe story. Your two sons, Nichol Jr. and Robert, graduated from Dartmouth in 1945 and 1946. You are a former member and vice-president of the Alumni Council, and were a pioneer leader in the Council's Bequest Program. For a number of years you were a member of the Board of Governors of the Dartmouth Club of New York, which you have long served.

In your home city of Pelham, New York, you have been a president and a director of the Community Chest, chairman of the local councils of the United World Federalists, and national treasurer and member of the executive committee of the American Veterans Association. And the list of your numerous activities continues, including both professional and social organizations.

For your service to college and community and the legal world, we take pride in presenting you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.

H. SHERIDAN BAKETEL JR. '20

For over forty years you have been eminently successful in life insurance sales and service. You are the general manager of the Union Central Life Insurance Company in Philadelphia. Your awards and honors in this business have been distinguished and numerous. You were a Chartered Life Underwriter nine years after entering the field. You have been an officer of several insurance associations and a recipient of the highest honor of the Philadelphia Association of Life Underwriters, the President's Cup. Author of many articles in profesional. and trade journals, you are the co-founder of the Life Insurance Digest.

As a stalwart alumni worker, you have served as a Dartmouth Alumni Council member and chairman of your class Bequest Committee. This year you have been president of the Association of Bequest and Estate Planning Chairmen. During the Capital Gifts Campaign you were the College's chairman in the Philadelphia area. The Baketel name is prominent in Dartmouth annals . . . among others in your family who are alumni, your father, Dr. Baketel of the Medical School Class of 1895, is a strong figure in the history of Dartmouth. It is a pleasure to honor you today with this, the Dartmouth Alumni Award.

FRANCIS HARDING HORAN '22

The Law and Frank Horan have formed a strong partnership. In your years of legal service, you have worked in varied capaci- ties. You have been both in private practice and in firms; you have worked for both the federal and state governments. Today you are general counsel, board member, and vice-president of the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.

Your Dartmouth affiliations have always been strong through these busy years. You have served as secretary and newsletter editor and as an assistant Alumni Fund agent for the Class of 1922. You were president of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association. As chairman of the Committee on Student Publications you made a very major con- tribution to the work of the College in that study in 1938. Two sons, John '59 and Anthony '6l, have graduated from the College.

You have directed two legal associations in your spare time and you are a trustee of Vermont Academy and the New York School of Social Work at Columbia University.
