M CARTER STRICKLAND '29 of Oneida, N. Y., was elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council for 1962-63 at the 104th meeting of the College's alumni "senate" in Hanover on June 15. Mr. Strickland, who is president and treasurer of SmithLee Company, manufacturers of paper products, succeeds Ellwood H. Fisher '21 of Cleveland in the presidency.
The Council elected Forrest C. Billings '28 of Hartford, Conn., vice president, and Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover secretary. The executive committee will consist of the three elected officers, Craig B. Haines '28 of Boston, and Henry R. Bankart Jr. '35 of New York.
To serve as an alumni member of the Athletic Council for three years the Council reelected Carl P. Ray '37 of New York. Lane Dwinell '2B of Lebanon, N. H., was chosen as the Council's representative on the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn for 1962-63.
Four prominent Dartmouth alumni elected members-at-large of the Council for three-year terms were: James D. Landauer '23, president of James D. Landauer Associates, New York real estate consultants; Frank T. Kennedy '25, partner in C. J. Devine and Company, New York investment bankers; Charles F. Moore Jr. '25 of Detroit, vice president of the Ford Motor Company in charge of public relations and advertising; and Edward B. Hinman '35 of Montreal, president of the Canadian International Paper Company.
Mr. Strickland, the Council's new president, has been head of the SmithLee Company since 1949. In his thirteen years of service with the company before that he was sales manager and then vice president. He was recently honored by Colgate University with a Civic Award for outstanding community service in Oneida. Mr. Strickland has engaged in work for the hospital, public library, board of education, and Boy Scouts, and helped to establish an athletic playground for the city. He is a former president of the Dartmouth Club of Central New York and presently is chairman of the executive committee of the General Association of Dartmouth Alumni and serves as head class agent for 1929. He has two Dartmouth sons, Seth '60 and Carter '62.
The three days of Alumni Council meetings, June 13-15, occurred during the latter half of Reunion Week. An opening reception at the Presidents House preceded the Council's annual dsinner in Thayer Hall, where four Alumni Awards were presented (see Page 25) and an address on "The Medical Science Program at Dartmouth" was given by Dr. S. Marsh Tenney '44, who relinquished the position of Dean of the Medical School on June 1 in order to give full time to teaching and research.
Thursday morning and the luncheon hour were devoted to committee meetings dealing with admissions and enrollment, the Alumni Fund, Alumni Awards, class gifts, public relations, regional organization, placement service, and bequests and estate planning. That afternoon the Council met in the College Hall lounge to discuss committee reports and major Council projects, and adjourned in time for a barbecue supper at The Keenes in Hanover Center.
At their final business session on Friday morning the Council members heard a talk on "Plans for the Summer Term" by Waldo Chamberlin, Dean of Summer Programs, and had the opportunity to discuss Dartmouth policies and developments with President Dickey after he had spoken informally on the state of the College.
Among the Alumni Council committee chairmanships for 1962-63, the important responsibility of heading the Alumni Fund Committee will be held by Charles F. Moore Jr. '25 of Detroit. Other new chairmen for the coming year will be Charles E. Brundage '16, bequests and estate planning, and Carl H. Funke '35, nominations.
