The largest amount given by any Dartmouth class by its 25th year, a total of $563,000, was symbolically presented to President John Sloan Dickey '29 at the Class of 1937's 25th reunion banquet in Thayer Hall on Saturday, June 16.
The class giving total in the 25 years since graduation was inscribed on a symbolic check which class gifts co-chairmen Francis T. Fenn Jr. '37 and Robinson Bosworth Jr. '37 presented to President Dickey on behalf of their class. Mr. Dickey responded for the College and the Trustees in paying tribute to this significant achievement.
The 408 class members, their wives, and children, also heard class chairman Wayne K. Ballantyne '37 hail the efforts of Fenn and Bosworth and their assistants. Fenn and Bosworth headed up the final-year fund campaign in the class that produced the last $137,000 in gifts added to reach the $563,000 record.
The grand total included $236,000 contributed by 1937 members to the 1957-59 Capital Gifts Campaign, $187,- 000 given over the 25-year period to the Alumni Fund and about $140,000 in gifts made to other College programs.
Gifts in this latter category included valuable paintings donated to the College's art galleries, seismographic equipment for geology study, rare books, several life insurance policies and other designated cash gifts. Some 586 of 631 class members have made one or more gifts since graduation. This participation by 93 percent is one of the highest recorded by any Dartmouth class.
