Done at Duxbury (Mass.) end of August, where Margaret and I have sailed - cooked out - lobstered - and otherwise had fun with guests., of our host there, including the Red Maloneys; a brief stay, so no trip to Cape Cod where we would have seen the Ad Adamses, north from Florida; on to Maine again, with a brief hello at Ogunquit with Harriet and Butts Lamson. Class Letter, guested for Butts, is in the mail, and our Football Reunion will be history when you read these notes, with the fall term well under way. Maybe we'll see some of you at the Harvard game this year.

Spud and Kay Spaulding will be back home again from their month in Austria and Italy. Spud shot an ace at Tatnuck Country Club on the Fourth of July; the ball is mounted in an ash tray by Acushnet. Spud says it's hard to live up to an ace; perhaps that's why they went abroad ... or to give you a chance to return your replies to that attractive card asking for much-needed summaries and pictures for the Class Book he's editing. This is one more request for your cooperation. . . . Other ad-man news includes the retirement of Al Brown, as Advertising Vice-President of Corn Products (Best Foods Division). I read his guest-column in the N. Y. Herald-Tribune with pleasure — about August 15. He'll continue to write and to consult. His leadership is seen in the offices he's held on the board of the Assn. of National Advertisers and the Advertising Council. ... I also expect to have seen Lee Ramsdell, whose agency-letter (Phila.) on his specialty I enjoy reading and occasionally refer to in my course in advertising.

Also retired: Roily Barker, and moved to Cape Cod (West Dennis). He's been in the Montclair (N. J.) schools for 35 years ever since he started as a teacher of high school English; he shifted into Guidance in 1948 and ten years later became coordinator of testing. He has served his full time with the academic groups and has been active in community affairs. . . . Jim Reid also retired, as editor-in-chief of the textbook division of Harcourt Brace-World Book Co. He was also senior vice-president and secretary. Jim will do free-lance writing, and we have a sample in the interesting approach to poetry appreciation already reviewed. Jim was with his firm ever since graduation. Many remember that he earned both his Phi Beta Kappa key and his way (by selling second-hand furniture he bought from seniors) . . . and played a hot game of handball. . . . Also, Bill (J. Roberts) Doe, as executive vice-president of the Springfield (Mass.) Bank for Cooperatives, as of early June. He has been the executive head for the past ten years; just 30 years ago he started work with this group as an attorney. (Degree from Northeastern.) He came up via the Boston Shawmut Bank and Swift & Co.

Honors to these: Ed Winsor received his LL.D. from Rhode Island College in June. He earned his Phi Beta Kappa key, and his law degree came from Harvard; is a member of Edwards and Angell, and secretary and director of Gladdings, Inc.; active in the Providence Chamber of Commerce, R. I. Historical Society, as well as the Dartmouth Alumni Association. He was cited especially for his civic leadership. . . . Larry Kugelman is now general manager of Woodlands for International Paper Co., and continues on the board of directors and as honorary chairman. This is another lifetime connection; Larry has been with this firm since 1927, shortly after graduation from Tuck School.

. . . Hal Springborn is named editor of the American Gas Association Monthly, after 34 years with Moore Publishing Co., publishers of similar trade papers for the gas industry; other writings on this utility are in the standard encyclopedias. . . . Ernie Hickock, Chartered Life Underwriter, with National Life of Vermont, was one of a dozen elected (Dartmouth alumni, that is) in the 1963 Million Dollar Round Table based on 1962 sales and standards. This puts him in top company as less than 1% of the world's life insurance agents are ever so honored.

No sooner do I track down Larry Fishbein in Bermuda (since 1958) than Variety tells me he's back in New York where he has been associated with E. B. Marks Music Co. with Herb Marks for many years. Now with the recent death of E. B. Marks, Larry comes back as executive vice-president. The firm has spread out from "educational and serious music fields" to music for films and such TV shows as "East Side, West Side."

So far as I can tell, the only '24 son entering this fall will be Daniel A., son of Edward C. Sullivan, now deceased. Last year we had two: Jim Hourdequin, and Fred (son of Solly) Thurston. More of this anon.

Far-afield department: Recently had a pleasant chat with Earl and Helen Daum, now in New York after about a dozen years in Australia for General Motors with whom he has been associated since graduation; other earlier assignments included Africa, India, and Sweden. He is now vice-president in charge of overseas markets and travels there a good deal of the time. . . . Red Newell is still in Singapore and a year older last month. . . .Jerry Sutton is still in Johannesburg, with Warner Brothers pictures. . . . Bevo and Quecha Beers are expected for the Fall Reunion again. (See next month's chronicle.) . . . Other travelers of note include the Parker Hicks, who has a lumberyard and hardware store up north in Colebrook, N. H., with his two sons. He and Theresa flee to Tampa from January through mid-May each year.

Academic honors to: Dana Bent Jr., graduated from Proctor Academy in June, and to go into the Air Corps Mary Eldredge, from Vassar with honors and a scholarship for study abroad. . .. Bill Diehle, one of seven Dartmouth students to win the coveted Woodrow Wilson Fellowships for graduate study . . . his in English.

Roily Gibson has returned from two months in Japan where he added to his collection of modern Japanese art. Since teaching at both the U. of Illinois and the U. of North Dakota, he is now Chairman of the Economics department at Washington College, in Maryland. Dan Pingree (Andover, Mass.) is Supervisor of Fire Records for the National Fire Prevention Assn., he has been with the Factory Mutual Engineering division since 1947, using his Math major in analyses of losses. . . . Win Nazro moves every couple of years with his construction jobs. Now he is building an east wing to the present Mass. Mutual Ins. Co. in Springfield, Mass. (He corrects the recent 24 Hour Notice that mentioned Steve Nazro: he is a son of cousin Frank; Steve's mother's brother is Sykes Hardy '27.)

"Pete" Haffenreffer '25, chairman andpresident of Narragansett Brewing Co.,was Chief Marshal of the famed Bristol,R.I., Fourth of July celebration this year.

Secretary, 2 Brewster Rd., Hanover, N. H.

Treasurer, 29 Woodside Rd., Winchester, Mass.
