Mathematics Conference Proceedings Published
OCTOBER 1963

NEW Directions in Mathematics" was the designation given the November 1961 conference celebrating the opening of the Albert Bradley Center for Mathematics at Dartmouth, and now, appropriately, a handsome publication of the proceedings of that conference bears the same title. Dr. Robert W. Ritchie, then Research Instructor in Mathematics at the College and now at the University of Washington, is the book's editor, and Prentice-Hall, Inc., is the publisher.

The conference, arranged by Dr. John G. Kemeny, Chairman of the Mathematics Department, and Dr. Robin Robinson, Professor of Mathematics and Registrar, brought together ten distinguished mathematics educators and researchers as panelists to analyze modern trends in mathematical research and to explore future developments.

The conference aimed at an examination of the future in mathematics, and the contributors, according to Editor Ritchie's preface, "were encouraged to be visionary and incautious in their predictions . . . (with) any topic appropriate for discussion as long as they (the panelists) themselves felt it might well be an important influence on the future of mathematics."
